Anyone ever use both the OEM LC/LX air filter and the Denso one (P/N 143-2083 for both the LC/LX and v8 4runner). Is there any difference? Is the OEM LC one made in Japan? The denso products one has white filtration material and is only $16.89.
I ordered a few Denso filters 6 months ago - visually identical to 17801-50040. I suspect they make Toyota's filters. The V8 4runner Air filter is 17801-07010 - its cheaper (like $17) and I was going that route when I use up the Densos as theres no cost savings and I can get them local. I go through a few with 3 4.7s.
Any reason for the different part numbers? Beside camoflaging the fleecing?

Are the 17801-50040's the OEM LC filters costing $26 or so? The denso filters are under $17 a piece if they are the same as the costlier 17801-50040's. Does it indicate on the box where the -50040's are made?

Dont have any Genuine Toyota filters left - but Im betting Japan. 17801-50040 are about that IIRC from a Toyota Dealer - local Lexus dealer quoted me like $42 when I was in for service. Supposedly the 17801-07010 (V8 4Runner) is exactly the same - just a different part number. Local cost was $17 so I was going to buy one and compare. If so I'll just buy those.
I like Denso stuff - but Cruiser Dan might be as cheap or more. Plus he's a good guy by all accounts. The Denso wipers are indentical to Genuine Toyota as well at half the price. Same with the Oil filters.
Check the flatness of any OEM Denso or "Toyota" air filter you buy for the 100 LC/LX.
I bought one a few months ago from the local Toyota dealer, and the filter frame was excessively warped. Since the filter frame is very rigid, the airbox clamping will not flatten it, and such excessive filter frame warpage will cause leakage past the filter frame seals at the airbox sandwich flanges.
I took the OEM filter back, bought a Purolator A35305 that is very similar to the OEM. The Purolator frame appeared to be flat enough that the filter frame seals should seal OK in the airbox sandwich flanges.
BTW, I checked one more OEM filter while at the Toyota stealer - also warped. I believe CDan also checked and said his filters were likewise warped. So I guess that Denso had a quality defect that escaped their system. (This sort of quality defect can escape notice by customers for some time, because the impact is not seen immediately, but rather, may take years to manifest - and still might not be associated with the original defect: Impact = shortened engine life.)
Toyota is a partial owner of Denso - 30% if memory serves me correctly. I've been satisified with all the Denso stuff I've oredered and had no problems with the filters.

I was very surprised to see this defect with a Denso part. Very unusual - unless perhaps they are made under contract in some non-Denso plant outside Japan. (I don't think the box said "made in Japan.)
Keep in mind that this type of defect will not be noticed by most customers. Who checks for correct air filter seal? Most people don't even change their own filters, let alone examine them closely for correct fit & seal - and if you think most mechanics are checking them closely, I've got some news for you. Further, a leaky filter will not cause any problems with vehicle operation, and the possible resulting slight reduction in engine life would also be overlooked by the vehicle owner - or, if he noticed, he would not likely suspect leaky Denso air filters used over the vehicle service life as a factor. (They're Denso filters - come'on, they're good filters, right?)
As for me: I refuse to accept leaky air filters. From ANY source.
Tinkerer, I remember you posting about this problem in a earlier thread. I have a 99 LC and 2004 4runner. When I went to the local dealer to get airfilters the parts guy recommended I use the 4runner airfilters, he said they were identical and half the price. When I compared them they are identical. After your earlier thread I also double checked them to make sure they were not warped. Mine were all perfect. Must of been a bad run, but thanks for the heads up on the warped issue, it could be a problem for people that don't replace their own filters.
