I need to see if my Speed sensor is causing shifting gremlins... i suspect they are, but I can't tell if my speed sensor is bad or not...
Somone near Auburn today with an 80? i gots a buddy coming into town with one tomorrow, but was going to try it this evening if possible... takes 5 minutes to get it off..

Which speed sensor
not that i will be anywhere near you but i had a speed sensor issue and learned alot about them whilst fixing the problem

Mine is a 97 so it might be a little different but the sensor that controls the shift inst the one that shows your speed. The shifting one was the one that i was having issues with. On mine the FSM said that if that one goes out them it defults to the speedo sensor. I actually replaced mine and that wasn't the issue (bad wire) so i might still have a working one laying around.

You speak of the Park/Neutral Switch... it's in a hard to reach spot on the tranny.. the 96 i sold probably had the same issue yours did but Jack (madafrican) fixed it after he bought it.
There's only one Vehicle Speed Sensor... same on all FZJ's. the sensor hangs off the transfer case and into a plug... most 80's leak from this plug, mine does too but i will fix that very shortly. Extremely easy to see and get to... crawl under from the driver side and it's the onliest cable coming out of the transfer case.

The FSM has a testing procedure of the sensor... and even though I could do that... I'm not electrical genius, in fact, I've tested stuff and they actually be bad even though the test read as good, and vice-versa...

Yeah.. Thats not the one I'm talking about (I'm not auguring because I know you have a lot more exp. with these things than I do) but the issue with mine was the next senor up in the line in the back of the tranny on the drivers side (going toward the front of the truck). The Manual said it controlled the shifts. I fixed the bad wire coming from there (after replacing the sensor). I was pulling a code but I can't remember what it was.

This is the one that I'm talking about. Speed sensor #2 I was pulling a p1700 code and having extremely hard shifts. I fixed this issue and adjusted my kick down cable (throttle cable) it helped greatly.

I pitched the FSM testing procedure (it was sending me in circles)
I hope this isn't insultingly simple advice but the way i diagnosed my problem is to just find where the wires were coming into the cab and one at a time i shorted each wire to the frame with a jumper and checked for Resistance inside the cab by going from that end of the wire to ground with a ohm meter.

I thought the speed sensor was only for the cruise control? maybe that's just another benefit to the mighty 3FE/A440.

I miss my 3FE/A440.... never let no one tell you the others are better!
bastard! Why does it hafta be changed! same plug on the A442 than it is on the A440... but instead of a cable going all the way into the dash to physically control the speedo, there's a gear inside the xfer and tehn comes out to hook into the sensor, and a wire runs into the harness... ARGH!

huh? speed sensor #2? never knew there was such a beast...

From what I learned while tracing my issues the sensor/sensors are rarely the problem, more likely a bad wire.
I don't have enough personal experience to know but that is what I had been told many times.
If your speedo isnt working that from what i understand shouldn't effeft you tranny (unless the other sensor is having problems too) Is yours an obdII?

ODBI

I'm having eletrical issues indeed.

of course, that's why i want to "borrow" another sensor before i drop major coin on one... rule it out or in.

I know where the ground is "supposed to be' for the speedo, but what does the ground wire look like? I'm searching for a pic but can't find one... I do not have anything attached to where the ground should be on my intake manifold...

Just run a new one. Right?

I'm getting bad shifts and herky-jerky motions fer sho... were you experiencing no speedo as well? or just bad shifts?

Just bad shifts.

Its probably just pissed that you talk so bad about it all the time.
Scullywag

got a phone camera? got access to your junk? take apic of the grounding wire that is right beside the EGR tube that goes THRU the intake manifold?
I wanna see if i connected it to another location after I assembled post-headgasket

Scullywag phuh

it better be glad "Scallywag" doesn't fit on a license plate!
