Other threads covering this. However the quick version for you (:D ): You can try loosening the antenna retainer nut a bit and lubing the antenna to see if it solves the problem. Or you can do like I just did on my '99 and call one of two Toyota "MUD member parts guys (SINCITY100 or CDan) and order the OEM antenna core (about $40ish) and replace it easily. If you wait until the antenna breaks off within the antenna motor you'll need to pull the inner fender liner out to access the motor...turning it from a 15-minute job to several hours.

Thanks for the response. Just to clarify that the retainer clip sits on top of the fender. What type of lube are you using, WD40 or a spray silicone?

I have used for the past 2-years a dry silicone spray lube. Yes the retainer is the chrome 'nut' that sits atop the fender that has 4-notches in it...presumably for some special OEM SST wrench. I just happened to have a bicycle bottom bracket adjustable pin spanner that worked OK.

Just fixed mine last week..

I orderedthe mast from ebay for $25. If you pull out the original mast and the plastic tail is shorter than the new one, you got yourself a 20 minute somewhat pain in the butt procedure of dissembling the antenna motor. if it werent for the location , it would be easy as pie. you need to remove the plastic wheel well..i managed to break the fragile clips holding it in place., but was able to mcguyver the clips back to life until i buy some new ones. eme if you have any q's...willomd@yahoo.com

Good way to handle it is to have a 3 year bumper to bumper warranty and hope the last time it breaks is right before the warranty runs out. Then after that lube it like recommended.

What ever you do, don't force it back down. That was an expensive mistake I made. Just replace it. It will go eventually and it will be one less thing to worry about if you do it now. I got mine at toyota for 50.
