I just purchased an antenna mast for a 1997 4Runner. I'm not sure how to install it. Help please. Thanks

Is it one of the auto-up/down variety (i.e., power antenna)?

It's been years for me, but what I remember is that there is a nut on the top of the assembly that you have to unscrew first and remove. Once this is out of the way, then you power on the radio so that the antenna raises, and at that point grab hold of it and guide it out of the assembly. It should be a long plastic piece with teeth on one side.

Once the old one is out, you kinda do the opposite to install the new one. With the radio on (antenna in up position), position the new mast with the teeth facing the same way as the old one that you pulled out. Then have someone turn off the radio, and guide the new mast down until the motor catches it and pulls it into the assembly. Then reinstall the top nut to secure it into place.

It's something like that anyway....

Thanks, but........

Thanks....I was wondering if it could be that simple, however, it's not going all the way down. Service dept @ Toy dealership says it's because the old piece of plastic broke off and it's still down in there. They say the only way to get it out is to remove housing and antenna motor, pull out the old piece and put back together. They say 1 1/2 hours at $85.00/hr to do this. Any suggestions on how to avoid this cost? If left the way it is, will it hurt anything other than me having to look at it? Any idea where the rest of the old part might have gone? If I were to do it myself, is it the house inside front passenger wheel well that they are talking about? And it's behind there? Any suggestions would be helpful, but if your guess is as good as mine, that's fine too, and thanks for the help

No. It will not hurt it--it will just be annoying. The plastic teeth on the gears usually strip out at around 90k miles. It will keep doing so like clock work. Every 4Runner owners I've met had this problem.

The best thing (IMO) to do is do the Tacoma whip antenna mod. It is not that difficult. Just follow the directions in that link. Then you will never have to worry about that again.

To answer your question, yes, the unit (motor & assembly) is inside of the passenger side wheel well. You need to remove the lining to get to it (as stated in the link).
