Does that little antenna dress ring (the gold ring) simply screw off? I wanted to check before I try to I won't break it.

yep, ushually if you can get enough fingers in contact with it you can turn it off by hand, if not wrap some tape arround the tip of some needle nose pliers snd set tthe tips into the slots provided to get it started.
