The old alt was starting to go so I figured it was time. The low light would come on and off after a cold night for a few minutes and at idle I was barely able to make 12v, mostly hanging around just above where the idiot light comes on at 10.5 to 11.8 on average.

Of course this had to happen AFTER and early 80 alum rad mod, blue clutch, front crank seal, and PS seal, would have been so much easier then!

Pretty straight forward though and with Bill's kit (photoman) it was pretty painless.

First source a 03-07 Sequoia alternator, ebay $80 delivered with 130K on the clock. Add a new brush from Beeeeeeeeeeeno for under $20

Bill's kit which is slicker than snot on a wet rock.

Remove the pulley from the old and swap to the new, impact works best for this.

Get the bare bracket fitted first

Follow the instructions! Get the new one fiddled in and before you slide it in get the belts on like such

Then wiggle it in, the bushing puller bill includes with the kit works great to make room.

I used a small punch to get it lined up for the main belt

Here are the old brushes, the FJZ is the left one, the dust cap came off with the metal cover, it was shot. I probably could have gone the brush route with the stock but seeing that I had just enough cash to go the upgrade route I did. The sequoia brush could probably had gone another 50K but for the small cash to replace it and ease of doing it now made sense.

At idle now I sit between 12.9 and 13.1, a HUGE improvement, almost doubling the stock output for less than a replacement chinacom that will notoriously fail before 100K it was a no brainer for me to justify.

Great post !

I have one question. For a future belt change, do you have to remove the alternator in order to wiggle the new belts in ? or can you replace the belts with the bigger alternator on ?

Thanks !

Another option is to get Bill's smaller pulley :bounce:

Makes belt replacement a snap…..

Yes Bill is still making them, they're really nice too. I would have done the smaller pulley too but funds were limited.

I'm not sure about that, guess I'll find that out in a couple years!

Alt part number?

Putting new tight belts on even with the alt off is a royal PIA . One solution would be the smaller pulley, but I don't want my alt to spin any faster as I am geared lower and already up there in RPMs on the highway. I wish there were a slightly longer belt alternative.

Very nice write up and pictures. That was a good idea lining the upper mount hole up with a punch first.

A couple of years ago I toyed around with making smaller water pump pulleys. The idea was to try to help out a little with cooling problems or for those in hot climates. This would also help with the alternator belts. I have had one on my 1993 for 2 years with no bad results. My 93 has the 150 amp Sequoia alternator on it with the smaller pulley. I was trying to see how the adjustments worked with the smaller water pump pulley and it was and is fine.
Maybe Cdan or Beno would know if there is a slightly longer Toyota belt.

If you're buying off eBay make sure it's an oem. I found several that weren't and emailed the seller for confirmation before buying. The last thing I wanted was to open the box and find a chicom!

Thanks Bill. I hope I didn't come across wrong. I have and use your bracket with the sequoia alternator. It is a very nice product!! I was just replying to another question about difficulty of changing belts.

I have the smaller pulley, and may decide to use it. I just want to exhaust the longer belt idea first. I am geared low so it is not uncommon to run 2800-3000 rpm on the highway for extended periods. Not sure what that translates into for alternator rpm, but with the smaller pulley it would be even more. Is it bad for the alternator? Maybe not just not optimal.

Photoman....

where can i find information on ordering your alternator kit?

devo

PM Photoman (Bill)

I ordered 2 brackets and pulleys from him this morning. He is a great guy to deal with, very prompt and professional!

Thanks again Bill, Can't wait to get my new Alternator installed

You don't be disappointed with the kit, the quality and attention to detail is well thought out. Having twice the available output in a genuine denso for the same price as a cheap rebuilt chinacom is awesome.

I can't, we can't, thank Bill enough for producing these as it ranks in the top ten best mods for the money you can do for your tank.
