I have a copy of the FSM, on paper and everything.

I'd like to find another book that has more explanation of systems and how parts work.

Is there such a thing or have I been spoiled by my Haynes MGB manual?

I thought the FSM did explain everything fairly well, but they expect you to bring some nous to the table as well. After all, they were written for mechanics.
You can often find videos of working models and indepth explanations of various components on youtube.

My first bj74 a decade ago I just drove it , was not interested in understanding how it works, ( just young)
I had very little mechanical aptitude when I purchased my second bj74, 18 months ago, and with my FSM I just read up what was what, and googled for info as required, and then tackled.
I'm now even seriously contemplating either moving to 60s rig, or get a troopy and drop a 12ht it and deck it out with all good bits from the early 70s family

But I'm surprised how quickly I picked up and relatively simple these rigs are to play with, 2 years ago, I would not even considered looking to build my cruiser to how I think it should be

Well, for example, my 13BT engine died on me as I was driving down the road. It turned out to be the vacuum shutter valve as the problem. I looked for that in the Ellery Factory Workshop Manual that I own and found (so far) one reference to it. It does not explain what it does and I have yet to find a picture in that book of where the VSV is located. The book gives a description of how to check its function but that's all I found so far.
I only know it is the VSV at fault because of this website/club.

As intend to spend as much time away from computers and internet as possible, I'd like a book that has more information.

Do you have the Toyota Repair manual for the 13BT? Really there is no replacement for Toyota manuals. Quick google search yielded the manual free online: http://repairmanual.free.fr/_engine_manual_3B_13BT.pdf

Edit! Sorry, I see now you already have the FSM (missed that first read through). Hopefully the link I left will be useful for others though.

That said, Toyota does have a lot of other technical literature used for training their mechanics. I've read some great stuff, but not sure what is out there for the 13BT engine.

GT Sport Coupe, I have downloaded on my computer the manual that is a link on this website: I think it is the one you cited.

I also have Max Ellery's "Factory Workshop Manual" which I guess is a translation: it contains some errors like references to pics that aren't shown.

The more you read up up the more the jigsaw come together, eg VSV. Vacum switching valve, there is 3 of them in the 13bt , that I'm aware of , 1, H4 activation, 2, shuts / closes shutter valve on intake, 3, Ac idle up.
N0 2 VSV is what your having issues with, quite common, In my 74, VSV 1 & 3 have been replaced, but not n0 2
Fun & games, the fun is in the diagnosis, the game is repairing it
