had the 80 on the sand for the first time. it was very nice. aired down to 22 (i usually run about 35-37). I did use the CDL button the whole time, i figured i'd not want any extra load on the viscous center doohickey. no need for front and rear lockers.

saw lots of jeeps. and lots of new FJ curisers. plenty of trucks. got a chance to pull out two ladies in a rental buick awd crossover, but they finally gave in to just call a wrecker - they had no recovery points on the outside of the car. we dug and found a spot on the frame i could hook to, but the molded bumper would have been at least a little bent, it hung so low (and by the time i got there, they had spun themselves so that the belly pan was on the sand and all 4 wheels were lug-nuts deep in the soft stuff.)

met one mud member, from the Va Beach area in a 60 on my last day.

anyways, it was a blast, here are some pics.

nice! you have a lucky son. it would be good to meet up. I have a soon to be 7 year-old and a soon to be 5 year old, they had a blast last month on a trail-ride and post-ride BBQ with other mud members' kids.

Corolla Right? I love Corolla! Yeah I was there last month and saw pretty much the same thing saw a 60 and an 80 too. Funny about the buick same thing happend to me with a subaru. I swear there must have been 10 people come out of it once they figured out they were good and stuck. Did not know where they put all of 'em LOL.

yup, Corolla. it was awesome to chill and have the stuff i needed 20 paces from the shore. caught 5 blue fish that last night.

WOW! 5 blues when they aren't running is pretty good. I am itching to get my 80 in the sand and get some fishing in too!

i was using a bigger 2.5 oz No-Eql and was getting huge hits (ie: a 12' pole was bending over and pulling out my 50# test on a mid-range reel - set at max drag). but as soon as they'd be pulled into the first line of breakers, they'd let go.

my thinking was: hook too big, and they were pulling on the 'tail' of this guy:

so i kept going down in size - but then i couildn't get them out far enough... i'm thinking it was a bottom dweller, maybe a flounder (?) b/c the pull was huge when they would grab it, but try as i may (letting them take it, bail open) they just wouldn't swallow it.

every other one, i'd feel a more 'rat-tat-tat-tat' of a 9-12" fish pulling on the no-eql, so i could tell that was the fish 'wagging' trying to pull it, but the big ones were just a huge pull, parallel to shore.

so i hit a tackle shop, then went back to a new spot; i came back with something smaller in size and went to treble hook, and got a 'dense' kast master to cast into the wind:

the 'pull' on the pictured blue, was what i thought, rat-tat-tat, you could feel the fish swimming/pulling, and the smaller treble hook worked just fine. when i saw them being pulled in, it confirmed what i had felt before. too bad this new spot had none of the bigguns

i did fozen mullet whole and squids for the kids to bait fish, and they got stripped - they loved seeing the 5" mullet bit in half, with the 'half moon' of the jaw line of the poaching fish. that made it "real" to them, even on the days when we came up empty, before i downsized my tackle.

Ive used that treble set up like pictured for many a year now and love it. I generally set up 3 or 4 poles. 2-3 of them with bottom rigs and 1-2 with a treble or something like that.

Thanks for sharing

Don't forget to fish for Pompano that are literally at your feet in the surf. I use an ultra-light rig with a flounder spreader baited with sand fleas. One of the best eating fish I've ever had. Buxton's my preferred area.

There is a place just north of Buxton called Canadian hole. I have spent many a day fishing and kayaking there and watching the wind sports. Great place! Not real wide but enough to get your truck in the sand for a bit.

Thanks for the tip on the Pompano

I've responded before about the canadian hole. Not my cup of tea. Windsurfers put a severe damper my seatrout fishing there. I'm talking about surf side re pompano. Don't think you'll find pompano in the sound...

Do the Buxton gas stations still provide air? My compressor setup is in the cruiser, not the Taco. Cruiser is now geared way too low for the sand...

I have not been to Buxton in a few years. I have been spending most of my time in Corolla. Yeah you really have to watch out for those guys but it sure is fun to watch them crash and burn :D

Me thinks we need an OBX run in the fall to catch the strippers ...er stripers moving south.
