I just purchased a 3B that came with a h55F / 2 speed transfer case / PTO..

My FJ60 2F has a 4speed ( I think, its out right now ) transfer case with no PTO..

Is there any reason I cannot take my current transfer case.. install the new ( to me ) pto.. and then use the 3B tranny ( h55F with correct shaft ) and put it all behind the 3B?

Why would I want a 2 speed transfer case ( 2H N 4L ) as opposed to the one I have now ( 2H 4H N 4L .. and maybe I can do that mod and get 2L )

Thanks
Todd

I think you are confusing some nomenclature. Early Land Cruisers have what is called a "3 speed transfer case" because they were mated to a 3 speed transmission. All the 60 series come with "split cases" which were mated to either 4-speed, 5-speed or automatic transmissions, depending what market you were in and what model year. What you call a "2-speed" transfer case is most likely a spilt case (if it is mated to the H55F) and it has the same "speeds" as your 2F transfer case. All Land cruiser transfer cases (except for the earlies FJ25's) have Hi-N-Lo selection and all have 2wd/4wd.

There might be some subtle differents in shaft splines, etc. that would require some modification to mate your existing transfer case to the H55F (you don't tell us what year your FJ60 is). I think it's more straight forward to use the trasnfer case already attached to the H55F and 3B. The only change would then be drive shafts (if you have aa pre-1985 Fj60), and perhaps output flanges.

Gotcha.. to clarify.. ( the truck jsut got back so I could verify in person.. ) AND THIS IS A NON US TRUCK-

Both transmissions are H55F ( as far as I know ) They look indentical - Other than the One hooked to the Diesel has what looks like to be some type of vacuum assist on it by the forward differential flange-

But the ones I just got imported from Japan ( attached to the 3B ) .. has a 2H N 4L selector - thats it.. I thought other FJ60's had the 4High.. as there was also the 2L modification that could be done as sited in the "best mods under $50" -

The FJ60 currently has a 2H - 4H - N - 4L

What could be ( easily as here nothing can be taken as "original" ) is that the transmission is out of some other landcruiser.. what came with all those options.. Unfornatly I have no other LC's to see nor do I have much experience with these models..

Here are the photos so I am sure I am being clear-

I guess in the end I want to know if it is even possible.. and then decide if it is desirable.. to have 4H -

I do not drive in snow or ice .. currently.. but may move back north some day.. so I guess I would like to be able to in 4 High..

What are my top speeds in 4L with the H55F and the 3B??

Thats the same setup found in the FJ62, the transfercase has a lever with H2, N, and L4, and H4 is actuated by pushing a button on the dash, which in turn activates that vacuum shift mechanism. you will either need to source a button and the vacuum solenoids, or convert it to have a lever control it. Im not usre what needs to be done for that, but you can probably use your linkage off the other T-case
this is the setup in mine:

YoshiMan is correct, 4H is vac operated via solenoids and button. Either use this setup or convert the transfer to lever operation. I converted my vac transfer to lever operation. There are plenty of threads on here about it.

Ahh... this is all making more sense.. the BJ6x I got the engine combo out of was a from a 1989 ( now says the guy I got it from ) .. so obviously a 62- which means a vacuum operated system right?..

SO.. it does have the 4HIGH.. I just cannot see it on the shifter.. SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I AM MISSING THIS -

So it lookes like I could use either of them.. I have to then use either a button and keep what I have ( I have the solenoids and vaccuum system I think in the harness that came with the unit ) .. or go back in time ( use what I have ) and get the manual levers to do it///

Either way.. I will be doing some reading-

Thanks a ton guys..

It feels good to start contributing.. but I still have a long way to go!
