Well I've read through all the FJ60 'Failed Smog' threads and have some ideas but I'm willing to hear more...........

I'm gonna do a V8 swap later this year so I don't want to get an Emissions Manual or spend a lot on parts, 'cause it's all coming out when I do it............but if I hafta the I hafta

The only reason I'm going through this is my tags are expired and I still wanna drive it for a few months more...

It's a 2 step dyno test,

My readings are:
15mph, 1517rpm,%CO2=12.1, %O2=0.0, HC=142ppm, %CO=4.21,NO=73ppm

25mph, 2374rpm, %CO2=12.3, %O2=0.0, HC=50ppm, %CO=3.87,NO=54

Last time I smogged it, same problems, I rebuilt the carb a couple of times and even put the Canadian smaller main jet(which helped), had a sticky EGR valve, and ended up putting on a new cat. This time the smog pump seized on the dyno so I put a new one on and it's just running rich. I hate to go through the carb again but I do have a new power valve to install(haven't replaced that yet)

It was tuned-up before the last smog(Jan 04) with all new Toyota parts including all new Toyota vacuum hoses, and it's only gone 7800 miles since the last smog inspection.

I've never adjusted the valves since I've owned it(about 13,000 miles) but I hear that helps power and mileage.

So...........new smog pump, 7500 miles on a new cat, all hoses hooked up correctly...............

any ideas?

So you only failed the HC at 15mph and the CO at both speeds?

Someone posted not long back to run the pump directly to the air rail. He had done that and the inspection agent commented that was the cleanest running FJ he ever tested? Defentially worth a $15.00 reinspection fee.

Jim

Yeah the HC was over Gross Polluter Max on slow speed and the CO was over DOUBLE Gross polluter Max on both..........

The NO is WAAAYYY down tho.............what the heck is that?

Ya that was me

Unfortionatly...from his atar...he is in Sandy Eggroll California. Cali. does an open hood inspection.........so my smog pump to air rail trick wont work. I am thinking they would see that for sure. I know this because......I am a Sandy Eggroll native myself...Now going through purgatory here in the land of eturnal rain and cold--- Wa. State...here where they are not so savvy...its easy..and half the state has no emmision tests at all...........of course not where I live.:crybaby:

Sorry Charley:zilla:

My only chance would be............and I think it's a good chance...........if it's not SUPER obvious I might get away with it.

It's a 'test only' station and I know the guy and he's already done the underhhood nspection so I don't think he'll look very close(or even at all)

He'll probably open the hood to attach the tach lead and not really look around

So it's just hook the output of the AI pump directly to the check valve on the air rail?

By the way all this stuff will be for sale later this year.............complete engine with smog, all the power steering stuff, newish TOYOTA reman alternator, AC compressor, new-ish hoses and tstat, new-ish radiator(4 row), new-ish smog pump, and complete exhaust system with the new-ish cat

I'll be switching to all the Ford emissions and cooling system stuff.......

and all Saginaw steering including the gear

Unless it runs TOO clean then he might say something...................

wouldn't that suck

I would check these things first. Might want to go ahead and replace the power valve if you have one. These three things could cause high CO and low HC at cruise .

Float level a little too high.
A little dirt or gum partly blocking the main air bleed.
Power valve leaking a little.

You got a new CAT and smog pump so that is good. You want to check out the air injection system and make sure the ABV is sending air to the exhuast manifold or down to the CAT.

Also double check your timing. Usually they will check it for you at the station before the smog if you ask.

When was the last time you changed the oil? Fresh oil will help. Air filter look decent?

Make sure you have vacuum above the PCV valve and it rattles when you shake it.

The NO will start to come up as the HC and CO go down.

Goodluck

Thanks Kevin...........

oil change and air filter are pretty new.........I'll check the others

don't know how to check the ABV, don't have an emissions manual and I don't really want to buy one now................
