I joined the club and blew up my front diff on Saturday. I did the trail repair by pulling the front driveshaft and removing the splined front hub covers, which got me home.

I removed the front diff and axles and bolted everything back together so I can move the truck around while I figure out what I want to do. I sealed the back of the hubs with aluminum tape to keep debris out.

Question #1- Are the hub bearing a taper press in that will fall out without the axles there to hold them in? I'm not planning on driving it across the country like this but a short trip to the dog park would make my pooch happy because she's not getting in my 964!

I'm likely headed toward an ARB/TJM and re-gearing, unless a 4 pinion falls in my lap!

Question #2 - Any feedback on some of the cheaper ring and pinions, e.g. USA Standard? The jeep guys don't appear to have any issues with them.

Thanks in advance!

Andrew

Alien?

The wheel (hub) bearings are independent of the axles (drive shafts) and will be unaffected. You should be able to drive around as much as you like, although I think there is a max speed while having the center diff locked.

What year is your Cruiser?

Once you pull the driveshaft and flanges, lock the center diff and drive as long as you like. I was over 65mph on the highway like that.... No issues. You're just making an AWD into a RWD.

update: I located a used housing thanks to a mud member and ordered an ARB locker and nitro 4.88's though the group buy on the 4Runner forum....
