Hello, my 01 stranded me couple nights ago, had it towed to my place and have observed the following after reading many posts on here.

It has 140k now and the Timng belt was replaced at 100k

I have two keys, one that is new and has a metal tag with code attached, i tried this and my regular fob, the security flashes normal with key out, insert key and it stops asap.

Cranks over but it sounds weird , no metal sounds but like compression isnt quite right? But some times it does sound right, really ive not sat and listened to it crank as usually it starts right up. Ive heard it try to pop or fire only once.

I out in a new fuse in the efi 20amp underr hood, checked all others under hood and under drivers under dash, visual inspection ok.

I disconnected the fuel line on filter side that has the quick release and cranked it over and fuel filled a bottle i had with a couple cranks.

Pulled drivers front plug wire, not the plug and put in a plug i had and cranked it over and it sparked.

Odd thing i did see that was new as the engine has been super clean, i noticed oil had leaked down on the passenger side on the cv boot area, fresh oil i crawled under and it appears to dripping off the front exhaust bolt. Not a lot of oil , maybe valve gasket? Head gasket? Worse i was thinking head gasket but i think it would stilll run Or try to fire up..

I do not have a code reader, should i buy one to see if there are codes at this point?

I opened the oil filler and used a flash light and had someone turn it over and could see movement , so i believe the timing belt is still functioning.

I read on the maf, i know the fiilter was changed 3k ago and looks new, is the MAF right oast where the black intake connects with the riound clamp? Do i need to remove the whole air box etc to get in to inspect?

Thanks for any help.

It's the small electrical connector right after the filter air box. Should have two Phillips screws on it. Remove the screws and you can pull it out for inspection.

I will check this, thanks for the location. I have not bought any fsm, still have my fj60 manuals ;(

Ill check maf, then im hoping someone can chime in on cam and crank sensors, i have ability and tools and ohm meter, so if i can be pointed to the locations and wires to check i can give it a go, if not ill need to get fsm and go through it, also if it just died and did not restart i did unplug batt and replugged, how would i know if there is a CEL? Would the disconnecting of batt clear codes if there were any?

Also a code reader , place to buy or decent reader just for this rig? Is that plug hanging under left driver side dash the reader plug in or i see a port on pass side under hood...

I was driving down a gravel wash board road , fairly steep, i was coasting , foot off throttle and noticed all the lights lit and i figured hey the engne died, i coasted probably 1/8 mi and found a wide spot luckily.

Thanks for your response

Rob

If all the lights lit and then the engine died then there should be codes to be read. I would think a totally failed maf would produce a code. The truck uses standard OBDII so any code reader should do. I would definitely look for codes before moving forward in the dark.

I looked and seen different posts, but can you direct me to a decent reader? something i can get local napa or autozone or?

Thanks

Rob

Autozone used to read codes for you for free.

ya i know, but i cant get it there and also im in good old California they wrote a law some time back that made it illegal for them to do so as the mechanic's lobby paid for this law as it was cutting into their business. boo

A friend at work has a sweet one he's bringing in tomorrow, the question is can i pug it in under the drivers dash or can i use the port under the hood on passenger side? i see a plug hanging near the fuse panel in the drivers side kick panel area, i assume this is a port?

Thanks

Port found, thanks, waiting for reader in a hour

Also i see this hanging from drivers side inder dash,

Just to wrap this up. New one to me and possibility for others.

Who ever did the last water pump it seems they didn't thread lock and/or have the proper torque. A water pump bolt backed out and dropped down and they told me there is not enough room for it at the bottom so it then shredded the timing belt so when they opened it up fir inspection it had 1/2 a belt left and it had jumped time and then died, the belt was so damaged that it would not move when the crank would turn over.

Good news is the Toyota Gods looked down on me since this is an interference motor and they put a belt on and fired it up and it run smoothly and as expected so no damage. There was more drama to this story as they called me after an hour and told me about the belt damage and wouldnt know for a bit on a damage assement, the call a couple hours later was hang time, as the mention of time to remove the heads etc etc made me think of various options :frown:.

Now at 140K, I have a new belt and water pump.

The Toyota dealer mechanic said that he felt there were several bolts that "felt" or should have been tighter, so the mechanic in CO , not a Toyota dealer, probably dropped the ball.

This was under a grand so I'm happy about this. :p
