school me!

i'm working on a buddy's 95 hzj75 troopie. stock 1HZ wit stock pump. no tach signal sender on the pump since it's not machined for it. i know we can get a signal for the tach ( installed a later cluster with the oem tach and gauges instead of dummy lights ) from the alternator.
question is, can i mod the alternator myself or is this something that an alternator shop needs to do for us? i know this can and has been done on plenty of applications, not just in the cruser world.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just a heads up here. The size of the pulley will be critical for correct reading of the tach. GM used the alt to operate the tach on the 90s era 6.2 and 6.5 motors. If the alt had the wrong pulley the tach wouldn't read the proper RPM.

why not use one of those flywheel readers with a converter box?
Universal Flywheel Tachometer Interface
I've seen them used on 80s and 60s. I'm quite sure you could get it to work on a 75. And instead of mucking about with pulley sizes and what not... you can adjust it with a couple button clicks.

Something I should have thought about the other day, Tiny Tach. This is a digital tach that reads injection line pulses. You just need 12V and access to one injection line to clamp the induction unit to. The face is 1.5" X 2.25". I got one for my Chev K2500 6.5TD and really like it. It is more accurate than the stock tach that reads off the alt. To see one go to tinytach.com and click on the "diesel tiny tach"
link.
