This is a 96 T100 with the 3.4L V-6, no mods, stock.

Little backgorund, it has snowed over a foot of snow the past two days. Last night going home my rural road had over 8 inches on it. So I have been in some heavy snow.

Going to work this morning, I wasn't busting much snow, as the county blade had opened half the road, but about a mile down the road, I noticed the lights got dim and the heater blower slowed down. Volt guage usually rides in the upper part of the guage towards 18, like around 16, rock steady always. It was down towards the center, maybe around 13, just battery voltage probably. I pushed in the clutch and revved the engine and I got a belt squeal for a few seconds, from the alternator area and then the volt guage went back to normal. This happened two or three more times in the next two miles. It just acted like the alt stopped charging and got hard to turn for a few seconds or something, then went back to normal.

Pulled over where I could and popped the hood. I suspected maybe it was iced up or something. There were many spots of snow all over under the hood, patches on the airclenaer, top of the intake and timing belt cover, fenders, battery and the shelf on the firewall.

It either sifted in from the hood, or blew in, or was blown in while driving through the snow. Alternator was clear, and looked normal. It performed fine all the rest of the 8 miles to work.

So has it just decided to die, did it have ice in it? Temps were in the mid 20's, it was 15 below a couple weeks ago, no issues then. Original alt I assume, 160,000 miles.

Any ideas would be great, need to know if I need to find one quick or not.

yes X 2 on the spin the alternator by hand and see how the bearings feel and if the shaft/pulley has any play in it, side to side or end to end
at the same token if it acted up why not just rebuild it now and then you will know you are good for a long time again..

Well have not had a chance to spin this by hand, however, it seems to be totally fine now. I have not experienced any more problems. Not driving through deep snow now either.

Well I spun it by hand a long time ago, all felt fine, still been working perfectly ever since. Still don't know what happened. I think it was the snow that was blown up under the hood that day.

Problems that go away by themselves return by themselves. Usually under less-than-desirable conditions.

Battery cable connection loose somewhere (they get looser in cold temperatures)?
