So my alternator on my 06 LX470 started to whine a little while back, with progressively worse voltage fluctuations, so I am about to order a new alt to replace it. Just wondering if there is anything else I should go ahead and swap out while i have the belt off. Besides the Alt and a new belt, should I also replace the tensioner or idler pully? Seems like I read about the bearings in those crapping out too. Just thought I'd see if there is anything else that might go bad that I should go ahead and get while i'm at it. Thanks for any recommendations!

Oh, btw.....its at about 130k miles.

Hope you are getting an OEM (not reman) alternator.

Take the opportunity to put on fresh intake gaskets when reassembling.

Was thinking starter, ignore that nonsense.

No need to replace anything other than the alternator.
Unless the belt is squealing then belt and tension are still good.
Fan pulley bearings seem to go around 200k.
You can get a Denso reman on Amazon for $200.

Ugh, I read alternator, but in my head I was thinking starter. The following is what I was referring to. @Higgin, ignore me, you won't be pulling the intake while doing the alternator.

So just thinking.....Those of you who have rebuilt your alternators and replaced the bearings instead of buying new, did you need a bearing puller to get the old bearings off and a press to get the new ones back on? Or were you able to get them on another way? Or any other special tools to rebuild it? I replaced the brushes on the alternator on my old 80 series as PM and remember it being easier than i expected, but I didn't mess with the bearings. The alternator on my current 06 LX470 is whining pretty good, so I assume the bearings need replaced along with the brushes. I have no problem tearing the alternator apart myself, but what concerns me is the headlights and really any of the lights in the truck have a faint pulse to them when RPMs get above ~2500 or so. I've only noticed this in the last 500 miles or so...the alternator whining has been getting progressively worse for a few K now. Would this indicate that possibly the voltage regulator on the alternator going bad? Or is the pulsing normally what happens when an alternator starts going bad? The voltage regulator part of the alternator is only sold as part of the whole alternator. Cant get it separate. That why I was planning of buying a whole new OEM alternator instead of rebuilding it. I'd hate to go through pulling the thing, rebuilding it, putting it back in and still have issues. But I would obviously rather only spend $50 on new brushes and bearings if thats going to fix it, than $330 on a new oem alternator. So really just wondering if the faint pulsing in the lights is something that happens just as the alternator is dieing, and would be resolved by new brushes/bearings, or is the lights pulsing not a common thing when an alternator is dieing and I should just drop the $$$ on a new OEM Alt? Voltage is running around 14-14.1 when off idle, but in the last few days has started dropping to 11.9-12V at idle.

Hahaha, I read this during lunch at work to day and was thinking "What in the world? Is there some intake gasket besides the intake gaskets that I'm thinking of? And what would that have to do with the alternator that's under the truck?" LOL Had me stumped trying to figure that one out the rest of the day!

Yes the pulsing is the voltage regulator going bad, the alternator puts out the same voltage all the time, when the regulator gets hot it starts acting up.

You can get a Denso reman alternator on Amazon for $200. There is no way you're buying a brand new Denso for $350 unless you have connections.

I took my chances and got one from a crash sequoia, $65 or so..

Is running great, 1 1/2, two hours To installed on a wet cold floor with out a jack, with a little more space under the truck (like with wheel ramps) will be much easier..

Well, that's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll just pay the $$ and get a new one and replace the whole thing. Bummer, I was hopping to at least keep the old one and rebuild it and keep it as a spare, but if the voltage regulator is going bad, then I might as well send it back and get my core charge back.

BTW....You can definatly get a brand new OEM Toyota Denso alternator for less than $350. Camelback toyota has it for my 06 for $269.53 + $60 core charge and free shipping. 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts - Camelback Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Parts - Free Shipping

I saw you have an 04, and looked it up and its actually a different part # and a higher price. $312.97 +$60 core and free ship. 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts - Camelback Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Parts - Free Shipping Strange. I thought they were the same from 03-07, but I guess not. Still less than $350 if you dont count the core charge. Just an FYI.....now we all have connections :)

Thanks for the info everyone! Ordering a new Alt and belt today!

I thought NOS wasn't available? is that legit or a reman one that just doesn't say so on camelback?

^^^ the -84 suffix in the part number means remanufactured. New Toyota is possible but more like $7-800.

I don’t know where Toyota gets their alternators remanufactured and I don’t know where the vendor on amazon remanufactures their alternators. Your guess is as good as mine.

Reason why I end up with a “used” one (but original) from a crash truck (needs to be running to be Crashed)
