My alternator on my 84 FJ40 is making a loud squealing rattly sort of sound. Obviously it's about to croak or something. Do I rebuild it or send it out for rebuild or is it a replacement item? I am sure it is still original to my truck as it only has 41K miles. Thanks for the help.

Do you have someone who can mentor you on learning these repairs? An alternator is an easy item to start your cruiser repair education on. Become thoroughly knowledgeable about your cruiser by using it as your education in mechanics. Many others on this board are doing/have done this with excellent results.

If you are not sure about rebuilding it yourself find a local oldtimer type shop that specializes in auto electrical and have it rebuilt. Keeping the original motor and peripheral parts working often gives you better parts than many of the over-the-counter rebuilt parts available.

Mine did the same - it was the pulley - caused by the wrong size belt and a screwed up tensioner bracket

I grabbed a pulley from a used alt and swapped them

if you can still get one, get it from Toyota as well as a new voltage regulator, picked up one last year and it was around $100 from Toyota, there was a core charge, think $35. Toyota alts are manufactured and as good as it get IMOP

never had one rebuilt....so can't comment
