Been having a couple of recurrent "problems" with my electrical. Don't know if they are related or not. BJ70/71 24V
First, Every once in a while while driving, the usual lights that stay on until you rev the engine to about 1400rpm on start up start to flash for no aparant reason, usually in synce with the hazard, that is they flash at the same cycle that the hazard lights cylce. Like the Alt is turning itself off and on, like the reverse current relay is confused? When it has done this for a extended period of time, like more than one or two clicks, if I turn the head lights on, it usually quits doing this.
Second, the volt needle and the lights do the jig at all times. That is, the needle bounces from about 26v to 28v and the lights go from normal bright to dim back and forth at about the same rate that he voltage needle does it's thing.
Is the alternator on the 13B-T the same as on the 3B?
Thanks.

Don't know about the alternator compatibility between 70 andf 74.

I had simlar symptoms on both, the BJ70 and the HJ60. Both times they were cured by a new voltager regulator and new brushes in the alternator.

another possibility is apparently the charge lamp relay. If it goes bad, it can cause similar symptoms (not in my case-I switched it out and the flickering persisted).

Me too... same problem.

about 2 month ago, someone here post a thread with a picture. He weld some link on the the charge lamp realy and it problem gone. I print the paper and what to fix the problem... but no time yet. Let me check the adress on the print paper at home tonigh and I will post the thread link.

Don't remember if the Cdn spec 24V is internal or external regulated. Look for a regulator inside the engine bay by the airbox...at least that is where the external regulators are on the BJ74's.

To answer your question about the 24V BJ74 and 24V BJ70...Yours (whether internal or external) will match the same type BJ74 alt.

Early BJ74's are external regulated, and late BJ74's are internal regulated. Side note: There is a split too with the HJ61's...some internal and some external. We have both, and also lots of external used regulators.

The alternator is an internal reg type, it's the original alt that was on the 3B.
The brushes were replaced a while back, might be worth a look to see if they are worn. If the volt needle is doing the jig it could be related to the regulator.
And as always.. check grounds.
