Alternator Bolt

You talking about the pivot bolt? Should just be a regular bolt with a nut on the front. They're a real bitch to get out if rusted. I took my alt out recently by disconnecting the bolts that connect the bracket to the engine block, much easier than that stupid pivot bolt.

If I remember right it is just a 14mm head bolt. It is a bitch to get too. The first time I did my alternator I was using all hand tools and actually accessed it from the bottom. The second time I was at the shop with air tools, and with a 1/4 dr air ratchet, was able to get it from up top.

Like they said, it should be a regular bolt. 14mm sounds about right. This is all of course if the PO didn't change it out with something else:doh:. IIRC, almost nothing on the cruiser needs a special tool.

Can anyone tell me what I need to remove the bottom bolt on my alternator? Looks like some kind of hex-head thing? 1990 FJ62

Soak it for a whle in rust desolver. Undo the nut if it doesnt have a thread in the bracket and tap the nut gently ,when it moves undo the nut all the way and use drift to a drive the bolt out.
Try moving the alternator up and down to loosen the rust around the bolt

Yep, the pivot bolt. It was a hex-key type head, I found a big one in my Father-in-law's old tool box to fit. Don't get me started about what is and is not "what is supposed to be". Between POs, the ##*^%*@#!s that did a so called rebuild, and stealerships...aarrrgh! I am doing ALL my own wrenching from now on. You don't have time to listen to all my tales of woe. I got fed up and decided to bite the bullet and have things done right. Everyone together now..."I took it to the dealership". Go ahead, have a good laugh, snort, giggle, chuckle, guffaw, or smug tsk tsk tsk. I guess I wanted to be an optimist.

po or po mechanic put mine in the opposite way, so i could not back it out without removing the fawking fan, so that bolt was cut out needless to say.

Lucky for m my PO, who I am friends with, were the original owners and I doubt ever even opened the hood, none the less did any DIY job's. Nothing too hokie under there that I have found yet.
