Hey all,
I just wanted to share a sub install I did on my 60 last week. Like many of us I really wanted a better sounding stereo without sacrificing any cargo space or drawing a lot of attention to thieves.
Its very similar to djawahir's cargo panel install well documented on this forum (although his is much tidier and better executed than mine). I just wanted to leave more of the infrastructure in place so my install is smaller scale. I opted to leave the vertical brace that djawahir removed in place. I built the box to fit solely in the space behind the left rear most panel where the rear window washer blatter lives. Unfortunately this did necessitate the removal of the two hooks that hold the blatter in place as well as one sheetmetal hook that routes the wiring to the tailights. But that was the extent of the permanent modification.
[BTW those 6x9s were already in place when I purchased the 60]
The box is extremely small (~.12cuft). The only sub I could find that would fit here and requires such a small sealed enclosure was the JL 6W3V3 which was $130. I located the amp behind the OEM jack which still fits with the amp in place as does the tool bag. I built a face plate for the box that takes the place of the interior panel that goes there so if I were to decide to remove it, the install is basically completely reversible (the blatter could always be hung with zip ties later on).
Anyway, just thought Id share this in case anyone else was considering doing something similar.
Would it satisfy a basshead? Not nearly. But it does fill in the bottom end giving it a more complete sound. What I was going for which I feel it achieves quite nicely is the sound of a decent stock stereo in a modern car.
The only thing left to do is carpet the faceplate of teh box so it blends in a bit better. Does anyone know of a supplier of grey carpeting that closely matches the stock color?
