I'm considering swapping these onto my truck, but I don't know what to look for as far as a quality piece. I know to get the 60 series hubs, but how will I know if they're in good shape or not? Are they just so solid you only have to clean them, or are there parts that need to be replaced?

What do the non-USA 80 have for hubs, the ones with manual tranny? Do they have lockout hubs?

So from what I've gathered....to switch the 80's over to manual hubs, it depends on the year that you have...at some point you should add a spacer. I'm not sure on all the years, but some 60/62s and some minis can also be used.

Maybe someone with a little more certanty can explain.

I've read the threads I've found here on mud that seemed relevant and I'm trying to get through the first step of actually getting a hub that's in good shape. I've seen them listed on used parts web sites ranging from 50 to 100 dollars. If I've got them in my hands how would I tell if one set is a piece of crap or if the other is in good shape? The ORC article on rebuilding never mentions having to replace any springs, or anything else except for an o-ring. Is it safe to assume the o-ring is all that will need to be replaced on any given hub, or is it probable that some of these other bits will need replacement?

On the section that contains the bits that slide over the axle and then the spring clip goes on the axle. This splined piece sets in a steel support that has some brass bushing in it. The splined piece should not have a bunch of slop, it should be fairly tight and and still rotate. If you have a lot of side movement it more than likely worn out. Year do not matter as much unless you know for sure that the birfields are stock for the year of the truck. If so them most 91- mid 94's will have the shorter stub on the birfield. Then most mid 94-97 FZJ80 will have the longer stub. THe stub on the birfield is longer by .300 in the spline area to have more engagement in the drive plate so the drive plate does not wear as quick.
So to make every thing totally to specs if you use the hubs you would have to shim out .300 on the later model birfield. Problem is that you would have to grind on the locking mechinism about 1/4 inch. You can shim .100 with not grinding but would have to grind to get the full shim of .300 in. I have wheeled hard and driving on mine the with only .100 shim and seems to have no problem. I have not spent the time on grind the locking bit out yet. project when I am not chaseing my 3year old around the shop. later robbie

I just received my refurbished '79-'85 mini truck AISIN hubs from Marlin Crawler. $75/pr.

They disassemble them, clean, inspect, repaint and put back them back together. The pair I received looked like they were brand new off the shelf. I was impressed :D they say they have several pairs on the shelf ready to ship.

I'll be installing them in the next couple of days and will let everyone know how it went. Probably take some pics too. The front drive shaft is coming out as well...

As per Robbie, I have a '93 and the shorter birf stubs so everything will work just fine. Stay tuned...

They are fairly well protected. The locking hub "knob" [in the center of the hub / turns to lock & no-lock] has an o-ring seal. The hub cover has a paper gasket btw hub housing & cover, and they have additional water resistance through internal cavity has some grease.

Medtro,

Just give them a call and ask for them. I don't think there is a part number... I just called since I saw them on the website in their "used" section. I was suprised that they had "refurbished" them for that price.

BTW, I installed mine this weekend with little problem. Just pulled the drive plates off, saved the gasket and installed the AISINs like butta'... Getting the circlip back on the axle inside the hub was a bit of a pain, but went pretty quick.

I couldn't get my driveshaft nuts/bolts to budge, so I soaked them with PB Blaster for later removal and completion of the project.

I run them on our 80 and I run them on my 60 series with 80 sereis drivetrain. Aisin hubs are bomb proof and almost never ever wear out. So finding a good set is rather easy.

In Australia we have 'Standard' 80 series Landcruisers which had part time 4WD (and therefore Aisin locking hubs) with manual 5 speed gearboxes, and we have GXL 80 series Landcruisers that are full-time 4WD (dont have locking hubs) and manual or auto gearboxes.

'Standard' Landcruisers were commonly used as commercial vehicles and were usually sold with vinyl floorcovers and seats (?), 'dual' front passenger seats, non-sliding side windows and manual locking hubs.

There was also an in-between model but I can't remember the model designation, and the 40th Anniversary model.

I need a clutch spring for an aisin hub for my 94 toy

I need a clutch spring for an aisin hub for my 94 toy.
Can anyone help me find one?

Are they the same as the 79-85 mini truck hubs we have here? I know these Aisin hubs are far stronger than the aftermarket hubs but I wasent sure if they were strong enough to handle a 6500lb FZJ80 on 38" tires with the front diff locked.
Anyone have these on a FJ80 that's used for a hardcore wheeler? I'd love to know what you think.

Post parts wanted in the parts wanted section. You might also have luck posting in chat.

I have it them on a hardcore 60 with a trail weight very very close to an 80. I've taken the truck thru butt loads of rock gardens and have broke many things and a hub was never one of them. This is with a locked front end on 37s.
