I have a 1994 FZJ80 unlocked except for the CDL. I am trying to find out exactly what the capabilities of the Aisin hub is? Instead of buying airlockers, or Detroit lockers, does the Aisin provide the same capability? Do I need to have a conversion kit to make me LC a 2wd? Or can I skip the 2wd conversion kit and just throw the Aisin hubs on?
Pardon, my lack of knowledge on this product.
Thank you,

Can you add a link to this hub info.?

Thank you,

Confusing question. Whenever a little kid tells me they go to school, I always ask "do you ride the bus, or take your lunch to school?". They always look at me with a blank stare because they don't understand what one has to do with the other. I got that blank stare after reading your question.

Air lockers or Detroit lockers make your rig a more capable off road 4wd.

Aisin hubs are PART of the equation for making your rig a 2wd. There are other parts to the equation.

What are you trying to accomplish? More capable off road? Or 2wd for on road less wear and maybe a little better mpg's?

To help clarify further:

Locking hubs or other wise called manual hubs. These are used to activate drive to the front tires. If they are unlocked, there is no 4 wheel drive only two wheel drive and that's going to the rear wheels. Manual hubs are only part of the equation in making your vehicle a part time four wheel drive at least for an 80. You also need to make your transfer case work as a part time case, This stops the front drive shaft from turning too and all drive is directed to the rear axle. This is accomplished by ordering a genuine part time transfer from Australia or buying the kit to convert your transfer case.

Lockers - whether they are factory, detroit, yukon, arb etc are device that goes into your differential. It is a traction aid that is designed to equally share drive to both tires. This is an advantage when one tire is lifted or slipping offroad. By design the differential provides drive to the tire with the least resistance. Lockers force the drive to both tires equally. Lockers make your truck more capable offroad.

Thank you Gofast,
You clarified what free-wheel hubs are? I knew, I wrote my questions clearly, because you answered them clearly and without sarcasm. I appreciate it very much.
Thanks again.

You can just put the hubs on without the part time kit, not the best, but you can do that

I know I will be flamed for this but, unless you are willing to buy a new set of actual 80 series aisin hubs which are big money, I would not even waste your time with any type of used aisin hubs.

You will buying a used hub that is really old and will probably need to be rebuilt, and there are some parts in the aisin hubs that are no longer available new, so that means you have to source those parts used if need be.

While the aisin hubs are cool and stout, they are more of a pita than they are worth IMHO

I find the whole thing a waste of time dealing with old used Aisin hubs.

I personally went with the warn premium hubs and they have been fine for me

If I seemed sarcastic, that was not my intent. I apologize. After I reread my reply, I can see how you might think it was sarcastic.

This is the confusing question. " Instead of buying airlockers, or Detroit lockers, does the Aisin provide the same capability?"

I was saying that they (lockers, aisin hubs) have completely different responsibilities.

What is there to wear out on a set of Aisins? I just cleaned and regreased the nearly 30 year old ones on my FJ60 and they look and operate as new. They are extremely simple inside. If you break a mini truck one you search on pirate and can get them for $40-50 pretty regularly. :meh:

The warns are made of cast materials and are far far weaker than the Aisins. Avoid them if you wheel your 80 hard.

Thank you kidglove,
Very good insight. I agree with you that the free-wheel hubs wouldn't be useful if the vehicle, first, is a four wheel drive and to install the hubs without the conversion kit. I was a little confused of the hubs job, because a few websites I visited just sold the hubs and didn't mention or didn't sell the conversion kit along with the hubs as the Slee website did.

Thank you Copenhagen,
That is what I was confused of? Whether the hubs provided the same capabilities like an air locker or the Detroit locker products. My research on a few sites and YouTube lead me to believe this and needed to ask? Because the Slee website provided a conversion kit as well, I though the kit on the Slee website was an added capability a hub could provide.
Now I am clear that a free-wheel hub is for a two wheel vehicle or a four wheeler with the conversion kit. And I understand it's stronger than factory hubs, but the Aisin, Avm, warn hubs would only be a benefit to me LC with the conversion kit.
I appreciate your response.
