My understanding is that a broken ARB airlocker fails abit more gracefully than an elocker. But I've never had a failure.

Insofar as they both lock, the airlocker isn't really an upgrade. It would be very low on my mod list, after pretty much everything else. In fact, I have a front ARB airlocker, and sometimes the compressor fails (overheat). There is alot to be said for having redundancy (if the compressor fails, at least I always have my elocker - if I was ARB front and back, I'd be locker-less).

The stock elocker is fine, and I see very few reasons to change.

If you are interested in a deal.....I bought ARB lockers for my 40 last year from the local ARB rep...got ready to install and the front is actually for the rear of a FJ Cruiser. Still in the unopened box..retail is $865, I just want to get close to my cost out of it $575.

If you have the elocker you can't simply drop in the ARB. The axle housing need to modified and the 3rd member need soem work as well. In short it is not really worth it as it will require a lot fo work or $$$$ to get the conversion done.

ARB is prefered as the carrier is stronger and helps to prevent deflection of the rign gear, thus making the ring and pinion stronger. Also the ARB engages and disengages a lot quicker than the elocker with less issues of a sticky locker, thus it tends to be more reliable in operation. Unfrotunatekly the seals on the ARB can start leaking (especially with an inexperienced installer) also the air lines and compressor can be point so failure. That said there are folks who have ran ARBs with no issues for years. I used stainless steel airlines on mine to prevent the draded blue line melt or failure.

The thought of using your rear locker in 4Hi while in the dunes does sound appealing...

that was my thought as well, but i didnt realize there was so much involved in swapping them out. I think that will be a later mod down the road when i have a little more cash saved up.
