Just thought i would post to say thanks for the help from folks with regards to my 74 loosing its gas. It was not as i feared the fuel pump. I had the tank dropped and they found some pinholes in the lines. She was apparently sucking air..hense it dieing after 30km of driving.

She is good to go now. I am parking it though. Got a newer Rubicon.

Where exactly were the "pinholes in the lines."

A stock BJ74 has a fuel return to the tank, and therefore is quite immune to air in the fuel lines.

I doubt if that was the cause of the problem, especially since it took 30km to occur.

At 19l/100km (very conservative) youd go through .19 l for every km. At 30 km you'd be pushing 6l of fuel which is more than the filter and lines can hold.... Might have been part of the problem, but I would test it again and see if its solved.....
Especially if you plan to sell it.
I know I would be "less than kind" if I wasn't told about something like that as a buyer..... Especially 30 kms down the road...... Lol

Took it for another 40km rip. No issues. Problem seems to be solved.

If your going to buy an 87 BJ74 and you expect to walk away with a long term trouble free vehicle you would be having some ridiculous expectations. Owning a 4x4 means its gonna cost you. If you have not figured that one out you should buy a civic.

True that! A 25 year old Land Cruiser is a toy, not transportation.

Exactly. A nice toy. When you compare to what many spend on side by sides these days, i would take a landcruiser any day over one of those things.

A simple solution...... Own 2 Land Cruisers so you have a spare. :)

Perhaps it's a 'toy' for city dwellers. Some kids never learned how to take care of their toys.

A correctly maintained Landcruiser will provide reliable transportation for much longer than the 'gimmicky' junk that's sold today. Landcruisers were built to be maintained, not abused and discarded when they're no longer 'fashionable'.

My 25 year old Cruiser has cost significantly less to maintain than newer previously owned N. American vehicles.

Sadly most all of us cannot own (only) 2 Land Cruisers. I own 5 to keep 2 running.

I have been pursuing this model for years - I am making a little progress with my wife....but I have only been at it for ~18 years....:p

(I have had 4 cruisers but only one at a time......)

18 years of marriage that is.......been closer to ~27 years with the cruisers.....

"I have been pursuing this model for years" ...........

Don't you already own a BJ74? :)

I had to buy an acreage to make it work. My wife thinks it's a peaceful country-living setting with a wonderful garden while still close to town but its really it's a thinly veiled Land Cruiser abattoir.

I was on the fence about buying another 74. I seriosly considered it even though i dont have a garage to work on them. Thats how nuts i am.
