So my '99 with 205k is starting to make a intermittent whining sound from the engine compartment. Sounds kind of like a supercharger whine that's been slowed down. When it presents itself, I can make it go away buy turning off the A/C at the HVAC control panel (the A/C is on when I have the heat on auto). The sound, when present, does seem to be engine RPM dependent.

If I force the A/C system to blow cold air, it appears to work but it's hard to tell with our temperatures ranging from 30-50 degrees lately.

I can't seem to replicate the sound with the truck stopped and the hood open.

I'm thinking the compressor (or its clutch) is on its last leg but wanted to hear your thoughts.

TIA!

Wow, nothing? Next time I'll be sure to show some serious rust or TRD badges on my rig ;)

Sorry friend, I feel your pain. Ask some questions about a new rig you want to buy or about lifts / tires.

Based on your description it does sound related to the AC compressor or clutch assembly. If you turn off the a/c but lineage the blower running, is the noise still gone? Maybe you could try one of those car stethoscopes on your pulleys and see if you can find the noise. A long screwdriver also works.

I have exact same issue at 199k. Having a hard time pinpointing even with a stethoscope but I think it is the compressor.

I'm on my second compressor at 320k and it is making the same noise after 20k but is still working. The original just leaked when it failed. I wouldn't worry about it until its performance is compromised or you get an error light. I fear the rebuilt units a available to us will not be as reliable as the new ones.

Thanks. It is warmer in Dallas now and it seems like the A/C is working fine. I'm pretty sure it is the compressor as the noise, when present, goes away as soon as I turn the A/C off.
