Again with the HJ 55 gear in an FJ62

Went to the scrap yard today and found this. Now, again would someone confirm that the 5 speed gear from this beast would fit without mods, into the 62 ??. The owner of the yard said that the case would fit with no problems, BUT i will face a problem with the Hand Brake setup as this sucker has gear breaking, and not axle breaking . As you can see my mechnical knowledge is close to zero, so i post any questions on this site as you guys provide a huge amount of needed expert info ....

I've not done any tranny swaps (yet) but I don't think there are a few things to keep in mind:
The blue and white FJ55 didn't come from the factory w/a 5 speed tranny. Maybe one's been added, but it's not stock.
Older and new cruiser tranny's bolt on the same to the back of the engine, but there are input/output spline differences - both for the engine and transfer case.


Swapping an H55 tranny into a 62 is becoming more and more common. There are some threads on here about doing that. You can also find a bit of info on the TLC Van Nuys website about parts required. I'm pretty sure that Cruiserparts.net can assemble the parts you need also to do this.

Maybe somebody should buy that FJ55? Does it run - what kind of shape is it in?

I made a typo with the "HJ55" as it is an FJ55, but where do i get the 5 speed H55 tranny from if not from these rigs ????!!!

as for its condition, its a useless case as rust has taken its toll on it completely ....

No worries on the typo - it was clear to me what you meant.

Sources for the HJ55 are many, some are new, some used, some rebuilt. A starter list includes:
Cdan
SOR
Man-A-Fre
Cruiserparts
Your local dealer

There is a long post on here somewhere about the cheapest price on one too, but the list above will get you started. Also lots of posts on people adding this tranny.

The only Toyota Land Cruisers that came factory with the H55F are the BJ70s, HJ60, and some BJ74s, as far as I know. No US truck ever came stock with H55F.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
