I presently on a 100 and have owned 80's and a 40. I am looking at a 1986 FJ60, 105,000 miles (I dont trust the miles, the numbers do not allign across the odometer), quiet a bit of body filler around the fenders detected, fair interior, there is a lot of rust on the engine block and frame??

I have not driven it yet. What should I look for and avoid in a 60.

They are asking $5,900, what do you think on the price?

If it looks iffy, it probably is. I'd say no more than 2K tops if it runs well. ALthough I would take a closer look underneath and at the body panels to see the extend of the rust or if it was in an accident. Where is the truck from? If there's rust all over the engine compartment it also may have been in a flood. In which case you should take a pass. Old trucks like these tend to turn up electrical problems and a submerged 60 will only be worse.

Good luck.

check undercarriage and frame for sure. that rig sounds suspicious though..i would be inclined to move along to another one. especially at the price. sounds way too pricey. i picked up mine for about $4000 with 110K on it and still feel like i got ripped off. prices have dropped on 60s since then too IMOP.

Thats a lot of dough for a truck that you are not too sure about. I gave $5000 for mine 7yrs ago with no rust, accurate 120,000 miles, and no body work.

That one sound like it is in the $1500-$2000 range.

it depends on your area, etc. but it everything on it is in only fair cond, and there is alot of rust, rust holes etc. then i would say that no more than $1500. so their price seems really high!!! I would definately keep shoping. If this is what you are looking 4? It seems as if you are not even sure if you want to buy a 60 series? I mean it never hurts to test drive, but walk away from this one!!

For that money, run away. Around here, decent rust free 60s can be had in the 3-5k range. I got mine for $3000 with 160k miles and no rust.

I'm looking at a 1987 fj60 with 139k and blatant body rust, though none on the engine block...for $1300. The interior is in great shape, the guy knows the history, looks me in the eyes when he talks about the cruiser, and it drives well.
Six thousand sounds way too high. Trust your instinct, there is always another cruiser out there.

If you're in that price range, and want a lifelong cruiser, look west for a gem!

Look in the vehicle for sale section of this forum. There is a nice V8 J 60, sprunged over, for around that amount of money. If the conversion is done right and runs well, it would be worth the drive/fly to pick it up. Its in Cali.

Thanks for the advice

The vehicle is in Tennessee and I am going to let it go. I saw it setting on a used car lot today and stopped to look. If you guys are like me, sometimes you git a little itch for something different and someone needs to talk you down.

I am not agressivley looking for anything but try and keep my eyes open for a good one. Lucked up when I bought my 40, and missed a very, very nice 55 by going home to think about it. I don't think this is the one.

Thanks for the sanity check.
