I have the option of buying an HJ60 JDM spec with a busted head gasket. It is a 1988 with a 2H 6cyl diesel. It has 140 000kms, and is in fairly good shape with only a few rust spots. It has been in Canada for 7 years now.

The thing is that the owner tells me that the engine overheated so bad that the engine stalled. He then noticed that the bottom rad hose had fallen off. After filling the coolant system back up and starting the engine white smoke was present in the exhaust?

Is this engine any good? How much heat can these motors take? If I need to rebuild this engine, please give me suggestions on the best 2H rebuild kits out there. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

dunno the prices up there but down here rebuild a 2H will be around 4K between parts and labor .. and that's not replacing head which in your case could be dead ..

I mean, those engines are hard to knock off .. but if you wanna pay for it, and then pay to get it rebuild, if worth to have a better idea of your head shape .. and the only way I know how to do it, it's open it and get it pressure tested ..

How much are they asking for the HJ60, if you don't mind my asking?

Roof gutters look pretty bad (rust), from a distance.

And from the sounds of it, it wasn't well maintained. (head gasket issue, hose falling off)

He is asking 4000$. Should I stay away from this LC. Be totaly honest and straight up. If I shouldn't buy it I will keep looking for something else. This will be my first Land Cruiser and I want to make the best decision possible.

I have a dead cylinder on my 2H and I got a quote for a rebuild here in Qc.

$5000 plus another $1000 to rebuild the head. The head is what will suffer the most when the engine over heats so IMO, you are probably looking at a cracked or warped head rather than a blown head gasket.

Sorry but at least now you know what to expect.

Good luck.

For a rusted (those gutters look bad), blown engined HJ60 JDM or not $4k seems steep. I would go into that engine expecting the worse cracked head, badly scored cylenders ect. It would be a lot fo work and easy $5k to get the engine and god know what else fixed along the way. Then you still have rust to deal with bla..... I would keep looking. Look at that truck as a $15k investment because I bet by the time you had it all fixed up and looking half decent you would have that into it. For that you can find rust free HJ61's out here with the far far better 12HT. If you find one out here look at it as a road trip.

I'd walk away. But I don't know the Canadian market at all, so I have no idea if it's valuable or rare.
If it was just the engine or just the rust, but both is pretty bad. For 4 grand you're essentially getting a large hunk of metal that will not move on the short term.
