Yesterday I took my LX on Cleghorn Rd in Southern California. I've done the trail a few times, but the last rains had made the trail much more technical in some spots.

Long story short, we were ending the route after 15 miles of mixed trails from fire roads to some of the most difficult terrain I've taken anything on. I was leading and was taking a trail that was getting somewhat difficult, but it was clear enough and looked easy enough to not use my spotter who was driving behind me.

Heading at a fairly steep downward angle, there was a deep V notch that followed around a left hand turn. The easiest route was to hug the V until crossing the deepest portion at its most level point in the middle. After doing similar maneuvers all day, I was expecting to get a back wheel off the ground. When it happened, I didn't lose my cool, but merely tried to continue on my course. The back right wheel climbed up airborne quickly, and I tried to turn to the drivers side to try and level as I crossed the deepest portion. Shortly after, the bank gave way and let my drivers side front tire slip strait into the rut, still on the brakes, the rear end also slid into the V and within a few gentle seconds of sliding the truck came to rest on its driver side slider and driver door. Also at this moment the side curtain airbags deployed and locked both front seatbelts. Luckily I was alone, and the sunroof was open. I turned off the car after putting it in park and applying the useless parking brake. Exiting through the sunroof I assessed the situation.

Yup, I put her straight on her side, almost completely. The obstacle that I underestimated had put me in my place. No injuries besides pride and some ringing in the ears.

I am looking for a solution to fix both front seatbelts and eventually replace the airbags

I'll post some pictures in the next post. Let this be a warning to all that have side curtain bags, that it doesn't take much to make them deploy.

That makes me feel a little bit better... I guess. I'm bummed, but overall I think I was lucky. The sliders saved me from a lot of body damage.

That's no fun!

What year was the side curtain airbag defeat button added. My 04 has one that I press every time I'm out playing around. I wonder if you could add one, easily, to earlier models.

Oh Schiesse!!!!!

Not cool. Sorry about your truck.

Glad you're okay.

Yeah, the spot where it happened was very deceptive. After getting out, there was a Samurai that had rolled 3 times on the previous down slope. In addition to that, there was a 4 runner that supposedly went down the same way I did.

My truck is an 03, and I did not know of any way to disable the side bags or they sure would have been all day... I guess they are disabled now -_-.

My main concern is getting new seatbelts so it's at least road worthy again. If I'm thinking correctly, changing the seatbelt units alone would let they work as normal, just without side curtains? I'm not thinking it's worth the repair at this point in time.

Forgive my ignorance (early model in my driveway), but why does the seatbelt go bad after a curtain bag (or any airbag?) deploys?

I was also surprised that your truck doesn't have the RSCA button, I thought all trucks with curtain bags had that feature.

Well, I guess I am a huge idiot. I've wondered what that button was for. That adds a lot of insult to the damage. not a good weekend for me.

Anyways, the seatbelts lock in the front, with what I believe to be part of the SRS explosive system.

So, my first question now is, if I don't replace the side curtains right now, but replace the seatbelt assemblies, will they operate as normal?

I feel so damn stupid. I guess my other option is to replace them, I do not want an accident on this vehicle record, but I guess that ship has already sailed.

Looking for any advice here.

I do appreciate all the responses about me being okay, and yes that is the most important part. I have learned a lot about this truck and don't want to let this thwart me from continuing to love it.

My 03 LC has an 'RSCA off' button on the left side of the dash - surely the LX has it as well...

Yeah, as I said earlier. I made a rookie mistake and had no idea what the hell that switch did. Such is life sometimes.
Ahh, missed that part, sorry to reopen the wound!

We all make mistakes - don't feel stupid, just learn from them.

I think your best bet would be to call and talk to an auto body shop. The seat belt pretensioners are controlled by the airbag module and will trigger if any of the various airbags trigger. I don't know if you can reset the airbag module without replacing the airbag. Either way though, you have to replace the entire seatbelt assembly because the pretensioners make the assemblies one time use only.

I believe the air bag system will remain inoperative until all components are functional. So if the SRS light is on then the system is off... I believe you only need to replace the seat belt buckle portion. (Pre-tensioner) Shoot it looks like the pre-tensioner is part of the outboard assembly.
