Its been in the upper 90s here so I have been giving the AC a workout (now that the cooling problem is fixed). My problem is that the fan, with the switch on high, blows like all hell sometimes and not much at all at other times. The air coming through the vents is always the same temp (nice and cold), but the fan speed comes and goes. If I turn the fan down to low for a few seconds, then back to high, it blows hard for a few seconds, then backs off.

Just wondering what you guys think to try. Having AC is great, I drove my FJ55 all last summer with no AC. I just want the fan to work all the time.

Thanks, Hodag

mmmm, I'd suspect the brushes w/i the fan motor are wearing out.

BUT, first check:
. . motor ground connection ( gang block behind dash above fan)
. . fan switch contacts,,,ensure they're clean
. . fan switch connection
. . connection at blower resistor ( above & right of gas pedel)

intermittent electrical problems are a PITA to diagnose...

I'd say it's the brushes on the fan motor, too. Next time it starts to crap out on you, reach down and whap it once with the handle of a screwdriver and see if that changes it's attitude. If it does, that's where the brushes reside, practically, so, easy test.

I got a replacement from cruiserparts.net for $40 about a month ago.

Blower is going, going, and soon to be GONE! I had the exact same symptoms, one week later, no air at all. Today--new air with a reman blower.
