I've got a bit of a strange ABS problem on my 93 HDJ80. Occasionally (not always) when pulling up with only light application of the brakes, like when manouvering in car parks, pulling up at my house or in traffic, the brake pedal pushes back against me and the brakes stop working. If I release the pedal fully and reapply then they work fine. I also don't get the problem when using the brakes more heavily. I presumed it was an ABS problem so I have removed the 60amp ABS fuse and now the ABS is disabled as expected (ABS light on) and the problem has gone away.
I'm presuming that it is a front ABS sensor problem, probably got damaged when the front axle seals were done just before I got the vehicle (It has been doing this brake thing very occasionally since I got the Cruiser). I have had the front end apart just last weekend to do the Birfs and couldn't see any obvious damage on the sensors but then who knows.
Is there any way to test the sensors, I don't want to shell out big bucks for new ones if they are not at fault. Could it be something else like the ABS ECU or the pumps themselves.
Hope someone can help on this one - got my MOT test (annual UK road worthiness test for those who don't know what MOT test is) and while it won't fail if the ABS is not functioning as long as the brakes pull up as they should, I'll need to take the dash out to take out the ABS light otherwise questions will be asked.
