Hi there. I am kind of posting as a last ditch effort to generate some ideas. I could find the make and model for my Rav4 so I picked this section to post, if this is incorrect please direct me to where I should have looked.
I currently drive a 2013 Toyota Rav4 AWD with ~165k miles on it. As of May 2024 my car has developed an issue where the ABS will be inappropriately engaged while accelerating. This problem is random, and not exactly "repeatable". It will happen at all speeds, from 20MPH to 80MPH, and under normal driving conditions. Essentially I will be driving along, and then all of a sudden my ABS/TRAV malfunction light will turn on/flash and the ABS will engage. At slower speeds when this happens the ABS sounds sort of creaky (like metal creaking), but I think it's a normal ABS sound when they're engaged (truthfully have never listened to the noise when it's been engaged in normal instances). When I am at higher speeds (>65MPH) the ABS engages and sounds more grind-y, and ultimately the brakes lock up and I come to a screech stop. There is some mild fishtailing that happens when I am at higher speeds.
When it happens I allow the car to apply the ABS and stop itself and attempt to pull over as soon as possible. I am able to use the brakes normally and the pedal moves slightly as it should when ABS is applied. Once I am pulled over at a full stop, I park the car, turn it off, turn it back on, and I'm able to drive on. It has never happened twice in the same day, but at its worst it would happen multiple times a week.
One time I pulled over, stopped and parked the car, waited a few minutes (5-10?) and attempted to pull away without turning the car off, but then the ABS applied itself right away so I stopped and turned the car off and on again before driving away.
I have taken my car to both my regular mechanic and the dealership when it was advised that I transfer care there. The regular mechanic diagnosed nothing as the problem did not occur with them. The dealership mechanic was able to experience the problem once and replaced my stop switch (stop clock switch? It's written stop switch on the paperwork but the service advisor manager keeps adding clock to the name. IDK.). The problem continued and when I returned the vehicle to the dealership they "opened a case with toyota" but the problem did not occur during this visit and toyota advised some sort of calibration (I have not been given a direct answer as far as what this calibration was or for, I presume the computer).
Anyway.
Does anyone know of this problem? It has never occurred while braking. It'll occur while I'm driving, and from going from a stop. My tires are only 1-2 years old, all the sensors on them are fine, and the tread is good. I can't think of anything other than this is "a computer problem" but I am not a mechanic. I'd love any and all ideas, suggestions or comments. A friend suggested pulling the ABS fuse but unfortunately mine is wired to the alternator and other important electronic components.
