Hi I havn't been on here for a while but I know this is the place to get answers when it comes to toyota. I am installing a vortec 4.3 into my 1970 series 2a land rover and running locking fj80 axles as well as fj60 tranny and case. I just finished my tranny crossmember and realized that the rubber issolater in the mount will have to be removed when I get the frame HDG'd. I don't want to make the cross member removable becouse in a land rover ther is not much point in it, the floor can be removed in short order. so my question is can I just drill out the two studs in the mount and remove the rubber and then reinstall after galvanizing. any help will be appreciated . I took a bunch of pics but hav'nt loaded them yet but if need be I can .

It's not really clear what you are trying to do. The transmission mount has two studs mounted to the bottom plate that penetrate through the cross member to bolt it on there. There are four holes in the top plate for bolts to attach the top plate to the bottom of the transmission. The rubber is bonded to the top and bottom plates. If you cut the studs off the bottom plate, I don't know how you will then attach the bottom plate to the crossmember. If you detach the rubber from either the top or bottom plate, I don't know how you will reattach it.

I know that some people drill through and use a through bolt on the Land Cruiser motor mounts. However, in this case the upper and lower mounting points are pretty much opposed to one another. This is not the case with the transmission mount.

ok so I have already welded up the tranny mount to the new crossmember and would like to fully weld it to the frame and have it galvanized to do so I need to remove the rubber so here is a picture so you can see where I am at. does anyone know how the rubber is bonded to the plate and can it be removed or replaced?

Now I get it :( That's buzzed on there pretty good too. I don't know if the heat from the welding may have messed with the rubber mount or not. Maybe bead blast it and prime/paint it???

The rubber is bonded along the whole surface of the metal. They are a PAIN to seperate, but can be done. The problem is you won't be able to re-use the rubber. I agree with get another one and use the studs. It will probably be less hassle in the long run.

thanks for the responses this is my first attempt at building a rig and it's all kind of seat of the pants right now. I think I am going to try and seperate the bottom plate from the rubber with a hot knife or somthing like that and remove the rubber and top plate together so I can reuse it after the frame is dipped. if I cant do that I will probably just build another cross member and get another mount. here are a few more pics of the project for anyone interested
