Just got in a strainer and gasket kit. I pulled the pan and strainer then noticed the new one is different from the old one. NP. The cork gasket on top was brittle and disintegrating so i unwittingly scraped it, cleaned the mesh with Brakleen then replaced, sealed up and filled back up with Valvoline full synth Dexron 6 Mercon.
Now the trans is not shifting into 1st without recving the motor and is overall sluggish. Fluid level is perfect.
My question is, does the cork seal (or lack there of) impact my new symptoms. Btw it’s a 1994 with 175k and I’m the new owner. Thanks in advance.

Yes. Both. Warm it’s at the upper notch. Cold it’s smack in the middle

@sakamo : If you have a 1994 FZJ80 (US spec with ATM) the transmission should be the A442F model.

It wasn't clear; did you replace the gasket on the transmission filter with a new cork gasket before you reinstalled the filter?

Did you fiddle with any of the valve body solenoids?

If you didn't replace the filter gasket (see photo) then the transmission may suck air instead of just ATF out of the pan.

FWIW:

The A442F seems to have more failed solenoids (more common than compared to the A343F for example) which will cause issues with shifting.

IME the Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic Multi-vehicle ATF works well in a transmission originally spec'd to run Dexron II/III ATF.
