Does anyone have the SST kit for the A343F transmission? I'm digging in to my spare now and would rather not spend $500+ on SSTs on a first-ever "attempt" at repairing a free, broken transmission. Especially when I'll probably have to spend that much on the rebuild kit alone.

I doubt anyone local has those SSTs, except a tranny rebuild shop. And they probably use existing tools or find a work around before spending the money with SPX for the tool. Even if the tranny was free, unless you have rebuilt a auto tranny before, you may get it apart, but getting it back together and working correctly will be a challenge.

I'd guess by the time you invested the money in the SSTs and parts needed, you would be more than half way to paying a professional to rebuild it with a warranty to back up the work. Removing the transmission yourself and delivering it to the shop will save you a couple hundred in labor.

There are several I'm sure I can make or use other tools for the same purpose. I will need to get a dial indicator and internal dial caliper but I got a line on all that from a guy on CL. There are a couple spring compressor tools shown in the rebuild manual that I'll just have to see when I get that far. I was just seeing if anyone had one local by chance. A guy in the 80 series section did this same thing on his A442F early model 80 trans with no prior AT rebuild experience and made most of the SSTs but did buy a couple if I recall. That thread and the free A343F convinced me to give this project a try. I don't think I'll dig in to the valve body though, instead opting for a professional outfit to go through and upgrade it. That's the plan anyway. Before I buy anything I'd like to tear it completely down and see why it wouldn't drive in reverse. If it's not actually repairable no use in spending any real money on it. The repair manual is very detailed and reading through it it doesn't look like there's anything in there very complicated in and of itself. There may be 500 steps to put it back together but each step is clearly diagrammed and described. I guess we'll see.
