2000 with 188k on it. Just had the tranny fluid checked about a month ago, and it looked good. Driving down the interstate today, a/t oil temp light comes on. I have to be in court, so I keep driving about 10 miles. Tranny is shifting fine. When I get there, I cut the truck off and back on. Light still on. Now there is a very loud, very unpleasant sound coming from the engine bay. Sounds mechanical, not a belt. Didn't have time to check the fluid bc of court. Should I just get it towed to the dealer? No good independent shops around here.

the lack of replies is a moment of silence for your tranny. Get a rebuild or one from any other year than 2000. If you are going the rebuild route, flat tow it, otherwise drive her to the nearest shop.

Thailand? i keed i keed

Cheapest will be find one from a donor. If you want new, call Beno (Onur @ American Toyota)

Does the replacement tranny have to be from a 98-02, or can it be a later 100 series transmission, since they went to the 5 speed?

Someone should figure out how to reflash the ecu for a 5 speed....

Just needed to be said.

Well I got it flat towed to a recommended trans shop. Should know what's up tomorrow. Cruiserparts.net quoted me 1200 for a used unit. I thought that sounded pretty fair, if I end up having to replace the whole thing.

Nope, it's been shifting fine. Still shifted fine after the light came on. I checked the fluid after I got it towed, and it looked fine. Also didn't make loud noises after it sat, and the light didn't come back on after sitting. We'll see. It has a lot more miles than most of the 2000s that lose the transmission, so I'm a bit surprised.

Shop called. Said he drove it for an hour and couldn't replicate the problem. Also said the truck didn't throw any codes when they plugged it in. He said they dropped the pan and everything looked fine. No metal shavings in the fluid. Said tranny temp never approached getting too hot. Recommended replacing all fluids, etc. And seeing what happens next. Dude seemed genuinely stumped.

Best case scenario, I'd say. Hope that it stays that way!

How strange. Gotta admit, it didn't sound to me like anything was wrong with the trans, but there's also no explanation for the loud sounds in the engine bay either.

Hope it stays fixed.
