Absolutely painted. That's an 18,000 kilometer survivor.
The hub bodies were not painted. Just the dials and outer rings.

Or my default answer is a silver Cerakote and they'll look good forever.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Looking at colors now.

I think Kelly has finally gotten to the bottom of the pig. There shouldn’t be any rust on or in this piggy for a long time after it’s reassembled. Obviously a lot of effort but I am of the opinion that they all either have or will have rust in these areas unless you do something similar. Or at least that’s my rationalization for slightly exceeding my $5k budget. 😂

Amazing. Any rough idea of when you might get the body back?
Next year. 😂

You said “rough”.

I think he’s working on it now in his new shop until it’s done though. So hopefully Q1?

That’s really impressive if he can finish all that by Q1 of 2026!
He’s been working on it on and off since Q2. But you might be right; Q1 might be a stretch.

You be puttin dat in a Glass display case instead of driving 😳😮😲😉. Ask b4 you touch 😘
I will drive it but probably not down too many gravel roads.

WOW! Just wow...

It does have a square profile of sorts. It's like a shaft seal ring, square with a U shaped cut out on both sides (maybe closer to an I-beam shape with flanges and web of the same dimension). Cruiser Outfitters apparently have them but I haven't ordered one yet. Will post more details when I get further information. The ASCOs are similar to the AISIN and, in fact, ASCO "became" AISIN in 1979 IIRC. Unfortunately due to the non overlap in dates, the ASCOs don't share 100% parts with the AISINs.
Did you order a set from Kurt/ @cruiseroutfit yet?
Curious as I have a few sets. I want to replace the Warns on the Pig w/ the long-body ASCOs...

I did order a set from Kurt. I also ordered a set of the detent ball and springs. They compared the AISIN ball and spring to an original ASCO that they had and they are close enough to the same size to work. I'm not quite as impressed with the O-Rings that they sent. They are just regular O-Rings and slightly smaller in ID than the original ones. I'm sure they will work but I will probably put the original ones back in.

Not to go down a deep rabbit hole but the original O-rings are more squarish with grooves on all 4 faces. The closest modern replacement I could find online is an X-profile O-ring. McMaster Carr carries them but they are sized in Inches and not metric. I measure the original ones at 2 1/8" OD, 3/32" tall and 5/64" wide. If I was going to try a readily available replacement I would try this one:

I ordered new hardware for the hubs as my lock washers and nuts were a little rusty in places. I also ordered the dial faceplate "screw with washer". My cone washers were in good shape so I just cleaned them up, good thing since they are NLA. When I looked at the parts this morning it was immediately apparent that the lock washers were too large. The nuts are M8-1.25 and the washers that I ordered are M10. I have plenty of JIS M8 washers so I will just use the generic ones but I wanted to make this post to point out that the ToyoDIY parts diagram is either wrong or I am somehow misinterpreting it. I have attached a cut and paste of the diagram with the washer and nut in question circled. These are the part numbers that I ordered and received. Neither number superseded to a different number when I looked them up on the dealer website. The nuts that correspond to the number on the diagram are indeed M8-1.25 but the washers are M10. I have no idea why.

Edit: Starting putting the hubs back together and realized that I posted some erroneous information on the dial screws. Edits below.

I will also probably reuse my old dial faceplate screws as the new ones (supersession) are different. The original ones, 90119-06024, superseded to 90090-11225 91641-80616 . Original was a screw (bolt) with a wave washer and a number 7 on the head. Replacement is a shorter screw with a flat washer and a lock washer, more or less the same but with no number. Again, just pointing this difference out to anyone rebuilding these ASCO hubs.

If you're going to be replacing o-rings just order one of these gauges...

It will also work with your quad rings and once you start ordering o-rings by size instead of application you will save yourself the cost of the gauge many times over.

Gotta at least drop a link here so we can watch and learn (or cry)
I have been working on this part time for a little while now and decided to start a thread on it. This 55 looked pretty clean, and maybe it is compared to some others, but there is still a lot of rust! Many parts I will fabricate myself.

The project:
1. Disassemble vehicle.
2. Strip paint to bare metal.
3. Mount on rotisserie.
4. Remove floors where rust is obvious and replace with new steel.
5. Fabricate new lower fender skins and replace.
6. Fabricate new lower door skin replacement panels.
7. Repair all the cracked steel, mainly underneath where the hinges mount.
8. Repair tailgate, cracked hinge mount and rusted lower skin.
9. Remove roof and gutters, repair roof and fabricate new gutters.
10. Remove lower half of quarter panels, repair rust and reinstall.
11. Repair all the other surprises found when removing parts.
