I've been seeing all these hood vents on here, and I've always loved the look of them, I just had a couple questions.

1. With the louver style, how do you keep rain/snow/dust out of them and off your engine?

2. Don't they scoop in extra dust?

I'd really like to put 4 louver style ones on the hood, but am worried about all our NW rain and snow, and dust in the desert in the summer.

I believe the Lumina louvers have a "Tray that goes on the inside of the hood...

I have noticed if its parked in the rain water will pool on top of the air filter housing. Its not a big deal as long as i drive it the wind blows it dry. I may make a tray to divert it away from the air cleaner but for now its ok.

Some pictures from an old thread of a way I made to be able to close off louvers. The idea at the time in addition to blocking some water was to possibly be able to retain under hood heat for winter.

UHHHHHHHHH, two snorkles? Is that photoshopped?

I read a snorkel is supposed to be a chick magnet. With my looks I figured I better have two. ;)

Actually, in my age group, having a pulse is a chick magnet.

Hey man every little bit helps! HAHA

Nice job on the vents. Probably the most functional I've seen.

I don't think rain/ snow or dust will stop your fj. If you are doing it for "looks" just do it. Otherwise, its not really necessary.

You OBVIOUSLY don't live in constant heat. My louvers have drastically lowered my underwood temps. I'm one of those people that just can't get the truck to stay cool. So not necessary? Yeah, perhaps for you.

Mine are from TrackSpec, expensive, but great quality - I haven't had any issues with pooling water. My engine bay stays kind of dirty from river crossings so I wouldn't really notice if more or less dirt comes in.

Nice 80! Looks like you have some good times with it. Do you have a photo that shows a view of those from underneath the hood?

there’s a picture somewhere in that thread

I have had them for a few years now. They really don’t allow that much more dust/dirt in the rig as they is usually enough airflow out of them to keep most debris from entering at least while the engine is running.

as far as the water issue goes, it not as much of a problem as I thought it would be. When I have the 80 parked for long periods of time then I simply put some duct tape over it.

That first picture is quite the optical illusion. The curvature of the hood had me thinking the louvers were installed the on the opposite sides

Are you talking just underhood and in cab temperatures? Or do you have engine temp issues?
