Sorry if I already posted this but I can't find it so here goes..

Our '98 LC has developed a strange and wonderful skill of making noises that might be best described as a combination of a loon and a bagpipe. It only does it with the A/C on or when it has been on. When its running it'll periodically do a sort of ascending whooping whistle. When it's shut off after being on for a while it will sit and 'sing' for up to ten minutes!
These are the best noises and sound like some sort of mating call , not at all unlike a humpback whale song! I wish I could post a sound file for your entertainment! It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side dash area.
Any idea what this might be? I could send a private sample if requested.

thanks!I

I'm guessing you have some sort of blockage in your evaporator.

I don't think you should fix it. It sounds to me like it's almost like having an extra friend.

My '98 LC does the same.
It only happens with the A/C on at random times and driving along.
The 'sound like some sort of mating call , not at all unlike a humpback whale song!' is the best desciption, haven't seen any whales following though, maybe out of tune.

The TX valve (thermostatic expansion valve) which regulates the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator is the culprit, however changing it requires a de-gas, evacuation and re-gas, as well as a replacement receiver/drier at the same time plus labour. The problem may clear itself, a bit of wax or varnish is possibly in the valve, I personally would not worry about it and turn the stereo up a bit for a while while having the A/C on all the time whether it is hot or cold and mix the air to compensate for the temp but keep the A/C working and it may clear itself. My 0.02

Apologies to the forum for bumping an old thread, but I'm so glad that I found this thread. My new LC does this and it's not bothering me, I just couldn't figure out what was causing it! My lady was bothered at first, but now she just calls it the Landy Ghost and it keeps her company on long trips. I just about died at the whale mating call comment, but that's exactly what it sounds like.
