I took my 2002 in this morning. They were gung-ho for something to do in the shop. After waiting 2 hours they told me the job could not be finished. The guy said that my drivers side inner tie rod could not be adjusted and needed to be ordered and replaced for $227. My truck was up on the alignment rig and the tech grabbed my drivers side wheel and it moved back-n-forth about a INCH. It was not like that when I brought it in. I'm not sure WTF happened but the tech pointed at my steering box and said the tie rod end was inside of the accordion boot? Is there a tie rod end under the boot? they said the OEM inner tie rods cost $167???

I'm not sure what a 2002 has for front end steering components.
I copied a link below..no such inner tie rod part...hmmm
If it's a rack and pinion I'm not sure you have a "inner tie rod".

I would call a parts shop... autopro or someone and ask... or CruiserDan on here or somebody else would have resources to look it up.

2002 Toyota Tundra Steering Components: Find, Compare, Read Reviews & Buy Online @ Yahoo! Shopping

If they are already doing it then insist on getting the old part back. You can take this down to a parts place and see if they are being honest as to whether it is a legitimate part, from your vehicle and if it is indeed worn out.

I have the FSM for the tundra and it does not have a pic of what's under the boot. It looks like the steering rack boot is the part the guy was pointing at. I wonder if they fubared my steering rack and wanted to charge me their cost of replacing it.. not sure.

this dealer has ripped me off twice before, I figured I would take a chance with a factory recall...

There is an inner tie rod end on these racks as there are on most, if not all, rack and pinion steering racks. It's under the boot where the tie rod goes into the rack.

The OEM part number is 4550339075 and list price is $151.87

Moog part number is EV433. List price is $214.27

It's 2.4 hours to drop the rack. That's the only way AllData shows to change the Inner TREs, but I find that somewhat hard to believe. After that it's .3 each to replace the ends. Most cars you can slide the boot forward and use a special tool to just pull the TRE. On this one you have to bend back a couple of ears on the lock washer first.

They are very easy to check. Grab the outer edges of the tire and move it back and forth. If there is free play see where it's coming from. If it's the inner TRE you'll see the tie rod moving in and out of the rack. If there is any free play at the inner TRE it needs to be replaced.

It's part number 103 in the pic below labeled Rack End

well that matches what they said/quoted me. This dealer screwed me royally a few times... so it's easy to question anything they say. Thanks for the help

what page or section of the fsm is that. I didn't see that pic.
