I assume the fuel system is under pressure since the last part of the instructions say to "prime the fuel system". The rest of the steps look doable. How do I get the system back up to pressure? I don't think it's a matter of just pushing the gas pedal  Thanks in advance

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try. The engine just died on me & I think it's a fuel delivery problem so I'm starting w/ the fuel filter. I hope it ain't the fuel pump  I've already had to replace the lift pump due to a clogged fuel filter :meh:

I have changed the fuel filter on my 99 CTD a dozen times in the last 120k miles and I do it the same way every time with no problems. Fill the filter housing (with diesel) as much as you can with the filter in the housing. You might have to pull the filter up a little bit to do this. After you reinstall the housing bump the starter and you should hear the lift pump run. Let it run till it quits. Let it sit for a few seconds and bump the starter again allow the lift pump to run until it quits. Start the truck. Mine works every time. Do you have a fuel pressure guage on the truck? If not and you want to add one then there are 2 test ports on the top of the FF housing. Pull one of the brass plugs and add a brass 45 (hdwr store) and a 30 psi fuel pressure guage from Summit or Jegs and you will be able to see the pressure your lift pump is making. It's something I look at about once a week just to be on the safe side. The Injection pump for that truck is over $1000. Ask me how I know...

Later,

Thanks for the instructional walk thru  I had a tech, from a nearby shop, come over & hook up his diagnostic tool & found out I have an internal fault in my injection pump :frown:, so it's been sitting in my driveway since. All this after I just sunk mucho $$$ in a factory reman NV4500 & clutch job  Now, I hafta put up w/ those crappy leafs in my '93 Ram W350 :meh:

Later,
i have an 04 the lift pump just went out do you have a pic of this guage an what is the differance in psi from clean to dirty. im hoping i can do somthing simalar to my truck

I will try to take a pic of the guage tomorrow. I only have 1 guage but there are 2 ports and I guess you could run 2 guages. One port is pre filtration and one is after filtration.

Here ya go.
