Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could help me. My A/C light will turn on if I hit the button, but it never really gets cold. I took it to a mechanic, and he said that the A/C "low-pressure" line must have a leak (or the pressure is low -- no pun intended), and that fixing/replacing the line would be 600 bucks.

As I think that's a bit steep, I was thinking about buying the part myself, then taking it to an actual auto A/C place to have it replaced. Does anyone have any idea what the part might "officially" be called? I've looked at some diagrams, but I can't really sort it out. Also, how difficult of a replacement job is it?

Thanks in advance!

Actually, after looking at the estimate again, it's not the "low pressure line," it is just the "low side line". Anybody familiar with A/C stuff?

Why not try to recharge the system first and see what happens rather than buying an expensive part that a mechanic doesn't sound sure about? You can buy a recharge bottle at Auto Zone with a pressure gauge on it for less than $50.

You can also put in some uv dye to help see where the leak is coming from

My A/C was shot also when I bought my Landcruiser. I took it to an A/C recharge place and they filled it for me for $110 and it worked fine for about 2 weeks and then all the stuff leaked out and it quit working again.I wasn't about to pay a lot of money so I bought this stuff called Red Angel Stop Leak and conditioner.USA Sealants | Formerly Universal Products Stops Leaks in Engine put this stuff in my system thru the low level port and then I put in a couple cans of r134a freon with leak stopper and all is good now.My A/C has been working like a champ ever since. My rear A/C still doesn't work but my front A/C is so cold now that I don't need it. It worked all of last summer without a hitch. And no I'm not a red angel sponsor. I just tried it and it worked awesome! Give it a shot.

Thanks for the ideas guys; I appreciate all of the responses!
