It blew cold for a few hours?
Easy to diagnose 'there is a leak' -- "where" is the hard part. First (with some charge), check if the Hi/Lo valves are leaking (drop of water will do it, just make sure it is dry before adding refrigerant). Next try a can of 134a with UV dye and a cheap blacklight. You can try a can of 'leak seal' but if it leaked all the freon in an hour or two, I would not be optimistic that would work.
I would invest in a set of gauges (or a can w/gauge) to tell you exactly what your charge is (and for proper refill)
I rebuilt/replaced all my A/C for under $400 - ( plus $120 for gauges and vacuum pump) the only regret is I used a cheaper evaporator and not the Denso replacement. You don't have to pull the dash to replace the evaporator, just cut the 1" plastic strap below the dash and secure back together with a strip of metal. Also, if you open up the system, get a new drier (basically a bag of desiccant that slips into the bottom of the condenser- $20). And don't forget oil for the compressor (8 oz for full system).
