98 4runner tranny swap.

I have a automatic tranny in my 98 4runner and want to know how hard it would be to put a manual tranny in it, or if it is even possible?

It can be done but the problem is the ECU is different and you would have to change that. The plugs are different so you would have to re-pin everything. If you have the time and lots of patience it would not be a big deal.

Thanks for the info. Do you also know if you can bolt the swing pedals up and if the cross member is still in the same spot?

It would be much easier time, money and effort wise to sell the Auto 4Runner and get a manual. I believe they made the 3rd gen 4Runners with manual transmissions up until 2000 or so.

I believe you would need a different driveshaft and a different cross member. I am not sure about the pedals.

The tranny that is in it was fine but i got it hot. Now in drive it almost seems like it goes into lemp mode. I drive it off road alot and from past experience the manual has not let me down. Is there any way i could beef the automatic tranny up?

The a340 transmission, and its variants, have been used by a number of different manufacturers (Toyota, Jeep and a few others).

If you don't have a transmission cooler, that would be the first thing on your list to put in.

Also, you can get the transmission rebuilt using heavier duty components like kevlar lined clutches, and the like.

I think that rebuilding the a340 will be cheaper and less troublesome thatn installing a manual transmission and all of the necessary stuff that goes along with it (different ecu, with different pinouts, installing the clutch hydraulics, modifying the crossmember position and mounting, driveshafts, etc etc.)
