My wifes 97 T4R has started making a weird noise. Not like a grind from worn brake pads but more of a rubbing. It happens as the vehicle is moving. Sounds like it is coming from the front passenger side.

Thought it was worn pads, but nope. I pulled the wheel off and there is a small amount of play where the rotor meets the lugs. I can turn it either way and the lugs hit the rotors. Maybe 1/8" of play, is this normal?

Forgot to mention, its 4x4 and all the boots were fine. It sounds like my old Datsun when the CV boot ripped and let out all the grease.
Is there anything to grease that I should inspect?

The slip on rotor would be able to move with the tire removed. Lift up with tire on and check for bearing looseness. Also, rotate everything by hand while off the ground and try and isolate the noise.

Ok, thanks for the response. Rotated the tires and the noise is still there.

I changed a knuckle on my Taco once. The brake dust shroud thing was bent so slightly on the replacement one that it would rub the brake rotor. It took a while to finally get it bent to where it wouldn't rub anymore.

Rotated the rotor by hand and its kind of tight. No noises, and everything looked normal. It sounds like a wwrrrrr wrrrr wwwrrrrr and it is irratating.

Had a similar issue on 2000 4Runner, Would get louder and faster as the truck picked up speed. Was a bad wheel bearing.

Had it replaced and issue is gone.

This after I did CVs, brakes and rotated tires.
