Hello folks
Recently I discovered a small coolant leak at the bypass pipe nipple. I am not too thrilled to remove the supercharger if I can help it. Has anyone experienced a removal of bypass pipe without messing with s/c? Is that a possibility?
The space appears to be very tight to get back bolt of the bypass pipe. See attached pics

As always, Thanks for all help

Yep, easy to remove. Had to replace a stuck open thermostat on my '97 SC a bunch of years ago. You can get to everything necessary without touching the s/c.

At most you need to go through your tool assortment to find what's needed to get into the space that's available.

cheers,
george.

Thanks for the quick reply. Appreciated
I can see removal of thermostat be easier but I was wondering about the bypass pipe that attaches to the side of engine block hidden be the supercharger.

Can you put an arrow on where the leak actually is located? Can't see any leak in your pics (or I'm blind as a bat)...

cheers,
george.

Hi George
Here is a better pic of the red/orange coolant leak. It appears to be from the worn out o-rings at nipple at the bottom of bypass pipe. I hope there is enough room to take the two bolts & wiggle out the bypass pipe.

I literally just did this two weeks ago. You have to remove the supercharger however you don't have to pull it all the way out.
  • I removed the airbox completely to make more room for the supercharger.
  • I then unbolted the supercharger and pulled it closer to the passenger side fender. Throttle body and hoses remained connected.
  • I unbolted the supercharger air intake from the side of the head and lifted it out of the engine bay.
  • The coolant bypass pipe is easy to access now. New parts to install are 3 orings and one small silver pipe.
  • Reinstall the supercharger air intake and reattach the supercharger. Be sure to seal the supercharger and air intake with loctite flange gasket.

Hi thanks for advice. I will follow your advice & report back if I run into any issues.
I guess our rigs are getting old & need more attention specially o-rings, seals gaskets etc.
Btw, have you serviced your s/c & any heads up
My rig has about 199000 mile.

I installed my supercharger a little more than 2 years ago. It doesn't need service yet.

Ohh, I didn’t know they still available used or new?
Mine was installed by local Toyota dealer in 2004 as brand new unit
