Hello guys,

After I came across ih8mud.com in January of 2013 and have been reading y'all postings on TX Lone Star Land Cruiser the last few months. I went out and bought a 1997 Land Cruiser and now it doesn't start. I only had a chance to drive the truck twice.

I replaced the starter, battery, spark plugs, spark plug wire, new belts and still can't get it to start . I even took out the aftermarket alarm and factory alarm....still can't get it to start. Any advice before I get it tow to the stealership?

Another thing, when it's in Park, P and D light is illuminated. Is this electrical problem?

I am in Grand Prairie, TX. Any one knows a Land Cruiser specialist around the area that I can tow it to?

Thanks for your help!!

It may be the neutral safety switch. If the p and d light are illuminated, something is off. Your vehicle won't start in drive.

Try shifting the shifter to neutral and holding the brakes while you try to start it.

Does it not turn over or is it cranking, but not starting?

I tried starting it in Neutral, it didn't start but it cranked.
I have tried cranking it for 5 mins....didn't start even in neutral or park.

I'm going to replace the Neutral Safety Switch tomorrow, before taking it to the dealer.

Thanks y'all for your help.

The trunk is in Park, both P and D lights are illuminating, when I put it in Drive, neither P or D is illuminating. This is not related to Neutral Safety Switch or Ignition Switch? Might just be an electrical problem?

Thanks,

Thanks Bob.

I will try to trouble shoot the truck tomorrow according to "Emergency Troubleshooting Procedures"

Will keep you posted......

The NSS will interrupt the signal between the ignition switch and the starter motor. Your starter engages, indicating that the NSS is not the cause of your problem.

Go basic: to have a running engine, you need fire. Fire needs air, fuel, and spark. Check for spark first, using a spark plug test light.

Check for fuel pressure next. This is easiest by attaching a borrowed fuel rail pressure gauge to the pressure bung on the fuel rail, ignition in "run" position.

I could walk you through the processes, but I bet YouTube has a couple decent how-to videos that explain more clearly what to do. Good luck!

Hi guys...

I got the truck to start today, drove around the block for about 15 mins then I put it in Park, the truck fluttering and stalled. When in Park, P, N, and D light all illuminated, when in Drive, nothing is illuminated........frustrating:(:(

Now that it starts, I will drive it to the stealership tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your help........y'all awesome!!!

If you're referring to the "D" light in the dash, it's common for it to burn out in these trucks and generally not an indication of anything other than a burned out bulb.

Mine has been out for a couple of years, but still starts and runs fine.

So, what happened to your truck at the stealership? I just bought a '91 LC with the 3F engine and 229k miles. It's got the same EFI main relay problem from what I'm seeing. Starts, drives, then won't turn on right after a 5-10 minute drive, until some time later. EFI relay gets super hot.

On the other hand, I test drove the truck and started it up at least 3 different times over 30 minutes before buying it, and the seller drove the truck from Dallas to Denton and somehow made it without stalling, so I'm not sure just WHY it's happening to me now...

I took it to Toyota Vandergriff in Arlington and left it there for a week. They couldn't find the problem.
Then, I had it towed to an Auto Electric Specialist shop and left it there for 2 weeks. They weren't able to find the problem either :(........

I don't know what's wrong with this truck......I have not able to drive it since I bought it 6 months ago:(:(

I really like this SUV....just can't get it to work.

I know it's a '97 and not a 91-92, but have you already replaced the EFI/Main relay? Not sure if it applies to this truck but worth a shot... assuming the dealer and other shop didn't already take that into account.
