Are the gear ratios the same? can I swap 'em ? My buddy's 2000 taco rear end went out, will a'97 4 cyl. rear work O.K?

repost...anyone...anyone....:D sorry, my buddy is kinda' in a bind, the rear end went out on his daily driver this afternoon. And I don't know squat about Tacoma's. We just picked up the rear out of another friends, wrecked truck....and I dont know if both rears are the same. Anybody got a link for factory specs? Hoping to swap them this evening.

No particular help here....
Sounds as though you want to swap out the complete assembly. I would measure dimensions such as width, bolt pattern, yoke, shock mounts etc etc before swapping complete assemblies that is if you can not get an answer from some knowledgeable resource.

Perhaps you can just change the gear set and keep the existing housing. You will have to check ratios, by counting teeth on the pinion and ring gear, either way to see if this older rear end will work. (especially if the 2000 is a 4 wheel drive.)

hope it works out

Well, he is back on the road ,in two wheel drive anyway. I know my first posts were a little vague. I was in a rush to go pull this rear, while we still had daylight. ;)[ I'm still working outside on gravel] My friend asked if they were the same axels/gears, and I did'nt have a clue. I figured we could at least just swap the whole axel assembly. But then found out the donor axel had a crushed brake backing plate:doh: ......so we just swapped thirds. I didn't take time to count teeth,so I still don't know if the gear ratio's differ. If we need to we'll just swap the front too......anybody know what they came with?
