Hey you all my friend is having trouble in her 96 rav4. She has had the code for an EGR issue for years so I don't think that has anything to do with this new issue. Her car runs pretty good on the flats and in traffic. I just changed the plugs and wires and that helped the idle a little. The issue is this, going up hills the car just starts to slow. It will downshift but has a lot of trouble keeping speed. It just slows until you reach the top of the hill. I cleaned the PVC and a little of the Throttle body. Air filter is good and it has fresh oil. Maybe the torque converter is not doing something? Sometimes in the real cold something will kinda squeel when the car downshifts to make it up the hill. Any ideas?

What's the ATF smell like?

Has it ever been changed... Is it full?

I already know the answer, I'm just asking...

Smells ok. I just added about 1/2 a quart last night. I used Valv maxlife as it is compatable with the Toy stuff. Doesn't seem much better until its been driven for about 15 miles. Then it is quieter just still has trouble on the hills. The noise is defiantly dependent on the load. I bet the fluid has not been changed in a long long time. It looks good. Not dark or smelly, a little light reddish color. I could drop the pan and change the filter and fluid if that would help. Poor car has 292000 miles and the trans was replaced at Toyota once. Can't remember when though. Almost 300000 miles and only one trans not to bad. Ok so give up the goods what is wrong????

CAt could be plug

throw in some injector cleaner for good measure.

Well I just had the cat pressure checked and stuff and they said it was all good. I put some MMO in it for good measure. I also cleaned the filter on the EGR yesterday just cause the is the code that its giving. P0401 I have read on the Rav4 boards its most likely the VSV sensor on the back of the engine, but it has been giving that code for years and haven't had this trouble yet.

Found this thread when I was poking around and figured I would update it. It was the cat that is right off the exhaust manifold. This car has two cats and it was the front one that was the issue. Happy to say this car is still on the road! Toys do run forever!
