Driving home on a Baja track and hit a mound of dirt that I did not see hidden in the sunset. Steering box skipped a cog. I am looking for a new or reconditioned steering box. Any other recomendations that you feel I should also replace would be great. Thanks Chris

I think the series 105 steering box is a direct bolt onto the 80. Impex sells them. That might be an option.

Do the 105 boxes include just a LHD? Are there left and RHD 105s? Could someone specify LH or RH when ordering?

Yes, 105's were available in RHD and LHD. Ergo, RHD gear boxes and pitman arms that also were upgraded at the same time. Oz is RHD and one of the biggest 105 markets. Everything is specified by Toyota part numbers.

Gear box: 44110-60202
Pitman arm: 45411-60350

Excellent. I might jump on a 105 box from Impex and i will be sure to order the RHD pitman arm.

You'll want to check if you have the speed sensitivity solenoid that came on later model HDJ81s. If so you'd have to research the differences between that and a standard box. The lines may be different and the steering shaft is shorter. I wrote a little about it in my build thread but haven't personally changed it out yet.

SNLC confirmed that he had changed them out - it's not hard but not plug and play.

I bought a second HDJ81 steering box out of Japan from autoparts.beforward.jp and will probably rebuild it.

Cruiser Outfitters also carries steering boxes - they just posted about it yesterday:

I wonder what exactly happened inside the box? Are any of the sector shaft splines twisted after this event?

There is a place in Washington called Red Head Gears that rebuild steering boxes they recomended that i get 105 rebuild kit with the sector shafts included.
I just got a rebuilt 80 gearbox from them actually!!!

Those are RHD 105 gear box and pitman arm?
I'm on the hunt if anyone has a lead. Already asked Dave.

Thank fully, my HDJ81 was one of the first out of the factory door. The less electronics….the better.
