what you boys getting for MPG? how do you like your trucks? which ones have the e-locker? and do they make them in 5 speed?

my old 96 got 16-21.
loved it - miss it. tried to buy it back.
e-locker available up to 2000, IIRC.
5-speed availablt up to 2000 as well. 01' and 02 were auto only

If you want more info on the 4Runner J.A.'s site is a great resource for reading about the difference between 4Runner model years.

It's been a while since my 4Runner was stock so I can't give you an accurate mpg number.

I have a 96 with 31in tires and heavy duty shocks and it routinely gets 17 miles in the city and get about 19 on the highway. I do run a k&n airfilter.

I get around 19-21 around our town- All mountains. I am 2wd though

My 99 Sport Edition 4x4 got 20.6mpg on the last tank but averages in the 19's. The rear diff lock is standard in the Sport Editions and Optional on the Limiteds. Mine has 4.30 gears which I think are also standard on the Sport Edition. Not sure if either is available on the SR5's. Yes they made them in 5spd but you don't see too many like that. I love it.

My 2000 is a sport with the e-locker, but it's unfortunately an automatic. My wife actually wanted the auto, and after looking for one with a 5 speed for about 2 months I finally caved and we bought an auto. It gets 19-20 at best, bone stock.

With full synthetic 0w-30 oil and without the A/C on- I can get 24 mpg. 98 Limited, automatic, rear e-locker, stock sized tires. Around town, with A/C on=19.

Thought I would chime in and be a broken record...love my 96 runner..never thought I would as much as I do... mileage similar to the other guys..the 2.7 litre is sort of underpowered for highway cruising especially against head winds, pulling a trailer and cause I put the 32 inch rubber on it. The 4 banger should be cheaper for idling around town and down trails though...I imagine that is where it shines over the 6 cylinder... no timing belt in the 4 either..unlike the 3.4
A friend has an 88runner with the 3.0 in it..I definitely get better mileage than him..trail and highway...sort of depends on the drivers foot more than anything typically.

This is incorrect. ALL of the trims (4x4) had the OPTION of rear lockers, including the Highlander/Sport package. I know this, because while I was hunting for a 99-00 Highlander, I came across a few that did not have the rear locker. Also, from the site link given above, this is what it says,

Sport Package
Includes P265/70R 16 tires, 16-inch
aluminum alloy wheels with cap,
large wheel arch molding, 13-inch
brakes, 4.100 rear differential
ratio, sport seat with hi-fabric,
sport seat material, fender flares,
four-way adjustable headrests,
cloth door trim, leather shift
knob and steering wheel, hood
scoop, fog lamps, color-keyed
bumpers and grille

Sport Package w/Differential Lock
Includes Sport Package with
locking rear differential and
4.300 rear differential ratio
* SR5 V6 4ECT 4WD models only

which denotes two separate Sport packages (one with RR DIFF LOCK and one without).

Anyway, of the three 3.4L V6's I've had, they all got ~21MPG on the highway and 17MPG around town (my TRD supercharged one got 20 and 16). I love the 3.4L motors (a wee bit underpowered, but gets the job done...esp. the supercharged ones! :D). Even though they've got belts, I've had none break on me. Even if they do, they are non-interference.

I would've kept my last 4Runner, but needed a truck bed, so got a Tacoma. They are all great vehicles and I would not hesitate to buy another.
